First time fishing the Irfon and was impressed by the variety of water but was hard going with low gin clear water and bright sunshine. Saw some good sized fish and lots of rises (mainly sporadic) but was hard enough getting close enough to cast without spooking them. Picked up a few on a griffiths gnat and lost a couple where I could cast from the bank including an oos grayling. The bigger of the 2 trout was 13". Not much in the way of fly life whilst I was there. Very nice place to fish, I'd like to return when the levels a bit higher.

Good to be back on this beat after the crayfish plague curtailed any visits last year. Very hot day, river was very low and clear. A few fish were rising by the church but couldn’t tempt any of them to a fly. Fished up to halfway on the beat without seeing anything else move.

A few fish were moving in very shallow water at the run into one of the deep pools and finally managed to get one, a very nice 22 inch trout. We walked up to the where the double bank access turns to single and the old man had two out of there. After a bit of a rest we headed back to the same place I’d had the fish earlier in the afternoon and dad managed to get another 2 in the same spot before the long walk back to the car.

By the time we were back down by the church the thunder was getting closer and it soon started to rain so we decided to return to the car and call it a day. Despite the heat and the aching legs the next day another enjoyable day out on this beat. We’ll be back when the grayling reappear and hopefully there will be some rain before then, it is desperately needed!

4x grayling around 10"
1x excellent brown trout of 18"

Good day. The beat is so long that I could have spent a second day exploring the bottom half.

River level (at Cilmery) at 0.47m and very clear; air temperature by mid afternoon around 14-15C. One small (around 9") grayling caught, two more missed. Very few insects visible and no hatch. A tough but enjoyable five hours of fishing in beautiful surroundings.

Only had a few hours. Beautiful though cold day. The river was in good shape, running very clear. Beat is very well kept - thank you to the owner. Spooked couple of fish though didn't connect with any. Haven't been for a few years as previously water wasn't great quality. On today's evidence - will be back.

Had one OOS brownie to a spider, shortly after starting, then nothing thereafter. Lovely stretch of water, but the fish weren't playing this time!

Difficult day on the Irfon. Very cold water, low and clear. Didn't manage to catch any grayling today, however, this is one of the best Irfon beats, so I will definitely come back when the weather gets warmer.

A cracking day on a beautiful stretch of river, quite warm at times, with a definite feel of Spring in the air. Challenging fishing, but plenty of water to explore – we managed 14 grayling to 10”, and a couple of oos trout (one over the pound). Encouraging for sure, and it was great to see healthy stocks of smaller grayling. Most were caught using small nymphs below an indicator.

Two anglers fishing Euro nymphing technique. No fish caught.

The river was quite high and coloured during the morning session at 0.8 on the Cimeri gauge, clarity improved as the day progressed and the river dropped to around 0.73.
