A dazzlingly beautiful day of brilliant sunshine in the most beautiful of surroundings. Had an excellent catch of...leaves, enough to carpet a wood, but otherwise not a sign of rise, maybe because fish put off by the most impressive bombardment of acorns I have ever seen, driven by the brisk wind blowing down the river

Last trip before season end. Had determined to fish dry fly only regardless!
Tough conditions. River very low, warmish day. Nevertheless three wbt to the net - klinkhammer and grey duster.
Marvellous.
Thanks also to Mr Charlie Nutting who timed dog walking activity to meet me on arrival and provide a warm welcome and helpful advice.

7 x trout, 9 x grayling to 16 inches. Surprisingly hard work, possibly due to a slight rise and peat coloration of river overnight. Almost nothing rising naturally.

There was little surface activity at midday in the mid-section so we started with weighted nymphs with sporadic success but we didn't find the big numbers. However despite the lack of rises, dries proved increasingly more effective and there was then a limited hatch of olives. This really is a fantastic and delightfully remote beat. Noticing from the beat notes that the owner would appreciate helpful suggestions, we concluded that cutting a path through the vegitation and brambles adjacent to the Granstand pool would make a vast improvement as it's currently tricky to ensure the longevity of waders when walking between the Coed Cowyn pool and the Hendre.

Water very clear and cold for August, so thought at an ideal level there was very little fly life hatching and not much movement to a French leader with bugs on the bottom. All fish brought to the net took a dry fly with others also risen to Parachute Adams and Griffifths Gnat. Best fish a stunning 16" Brown which rose from deep and then leapt several times across the pool in surprise at being hooked. Similar tactics worked much better next day on the Cammarch Hotel water, where French leader and deep bugs accounted for several browns and grayling and a best grayling of 15 1/2" came to a Griffifths Sparkle Gnat.

2 hrs evening fly fishing. Very little surface action. Minimal visible fish activity. All fish caught within stretch 0.2miles u/s chapel. River coloured after rain 48-36hrs before. Water very low. Sky grey. Air cool. Slight cold breeze. Occasional very light drizzle. Grayling all caught rising to a small Parachute Adams Brownie caught nymphing with a gold headed stonefly nymph. All fish around a pound & in g ood condition. All released from barbless hooks & recovered quickly.
This was very much a ‘last minute’ opportunity for a quick flick of the fly at the end of a cycling holiday & despite the conditions & late time, it was a lovely couple of hours on a lovely little beat. I would have loved to have explored more of the beat & can’t wait to make a return, specifically to fish, when I can dedicate a whole day to the Irfon.
The online system worked simply & brilliantly, really good instructions sent once booked & am very grateful to Mr Charlie Nutting for getting me fishing quickly when I turned up in-announced at his door.
Many thanks Wye & Usk Foundation Fishing Passport & to the landowner for this brief but enjoyable opportunity to fish this lovely spot.
