I do love this beat. Even though it is now half the length it was, the best bits are still there. There were decent hatches of mayfly and strong rising throughout the day, peaking mid to late afternoon. I have also realised there are a lot of grayling here too. Couldn't entice any of them! Caught several trout, but one was most exciting.... I hooked what a thought was a parr and was just reeling in to let it off and there was a 3lb trout on the end! We were both shocked to see each other, but then I realised, it had my parr in it's mouth, not the fly!! Suffice to say, I didn't get to land it....

Downstream wind picked up in the afternoon with sparse hatches. 4 on dry and 2 on bugs. One a nice plump 2lb+ fish. All returned.

We returned all the fish. Fairly windy day, but fish rising most of the day, but only in a couple of pools. We only fished dry flies and Klinkhammers. The best flies were Adams, Hares Ear Klink, Sherry Spinner and a Brown Sedge last thing. There were natural Mayflies of various sizes but our imitations were not as successful as the other flies.
We very much enjoyed our day and will certainly like to come again.

We had a great day, fishing and catching all fish on dries according to the hatch/time of day. Flies included Royal Wulff, Dogsbody, Double Decker, Red Spinner and Olive comparaduns. The fish were a mixed bag in size up to about 18 inches and all in great shape.
(Just for future reference it seems there is an overlap in the fishing at the top of the beat with the far bank being also part of a Dinas stretch so you might find someone fishing this part as we did - assume it is not WUF water as not listed on map for booking.)
WUF Note : The beat limits are clearly shown on the map issued with booking. The Dinas fishery can be booked through the Foundation and is on the website.

Caught 2 small trout on klinkhammer. Very little rising during the day and very few hatches. Had to leave before evening so may have missed the best time.

Both rods - Blank. Really wet day - river conditions from run off through the top stream made matters worse throughout. By mid afternoon the water was very silted.
Although in red in the instructions there was no sign of any book at the gate.

Touched a couple of small brown trout but the lovely bright day, low river made the fishing very tough. Stunning stretch though, perfect for a half day. The signpost first right after you cross the Usk no longer says Abercynrig but still easy to find your way.

We had a fairly leisurely start to our day with breakfast at the Wellington in Brecon, which was superb. We made the short drive down to the river at 9am and got fishing soon after. Bright conditions with a very low and clear river Usk made for challenging fishing but it was a glorious day and fishing in t-shirts and waders was a real treat! Fish were rising occasionally and the first fish of 10 inches was taken on a small olive imitation. Dry flies were the order of the day but we didn't catch two fish on the same fly! Every fish seemed to prefer a different fly which was strange. However we landed some cracking fish, the biggest was around the 20 inch mark, we had others at 18 inches that spent more time out the water than in! 16 inches and a couple at 15 inches. Lovely day, lovely beat - will return!

First trip to the Usk with the background of beacon's a magical setting. Shame about the weather hailstorm and snow one minute then the sun came out for half an hour and a olive hatch with brought on the fish.caught a lovely little brown that fought every inch to the net.looking forward to my return.
