Arrived at river having seen off a field full of young bullocks… there was plenty of insect life with a lot of yellow may duns and sedges in the air, fish were rising sporadically. We had a few but 7 o’clock came and decision time … stay or go? Cloud cover had increased throughout the afternoon so we gambled and stayed …. To witness one of the most wonderful spinner falls seen on the Wye with mayflies, olives and yellow May duns dancing …. Sedges and stoneflies too. The fish were impressed too … we ended up with 24, a good mix of year classes for the trout , best one a stunning 17 incher. JB briefly contacted a shad … can’t wait till the grayling re-appear in numbers too. Saw a mink and otter… what a wonderful day, thank you Wye and Usk !

It was my first time on this beat, so spent the morning exploring and flicking a spinner into each pool. Very few trout rising and no salmon seen.

After lunch, I focused on the lower half: Chapel Catch and Waterworks. No salmon seen again, but I did see a massive barbel sheltering in a rock gutter. The wading, although over bedrock, was fairly simple (assuming you have good studs on your boots)

The gutters also held a huge population of shad which repeatedly nailed my mepps spinner. To avoid this species any further, I upped to a 7cm Rapala. This worked. Well, my lure no longer bothered the shad, but any passing salmon were similarly untroubled.

Great day out.

No salmon caught but spent an HR watching the movement of two large fish splashing and moving into the gutters and back into the main pool . The one fish actually came right into the shallow part of the gutters very close into the right hand bank creating huge swirels as it rubbed itself on the rocks . I presume trying to remove lice . Great to watch such a large fish . 4 healthy brown trout caught largest of around 1lb and 3 shad caught . There must of been a showel of them as they were rising everywhere . Very colourful fish and the take is quite aggressive.
