Fished from 5pm to 9pm. There was a fairly decent hatch of sedges, and a few olives and yellow mays. The fish were looking up and took an elk hair emerger as often as the little ptn I fished below it. Most of the fish were small, the biggest graying was 9/10" and two of the trout were about the same.

Low water with a strong downstream breeze. Most fish taken on dark bodied gold head nymphs in the faster water. Several on dry fly, olive Klink, late afternoon. Fishing buddy Alex Fidgen had the pleasure of seeing two otters in the reeds and water below the hut as he was waiting for me to return from the bottom of the beat. Also had a fly by from a very low level Hercules.

Tricky conditions with strong downstream breeze all day - managed one decent 12" grayling from the Clettwr mouth and missed a few more takes on a dry, including further downstream where there was no respite from the wind, unfortunately it just followed around the bend in the river. Heard a very large fish jump by the Armies pool, assume it was a trout as it was on the far bank under the trees not a likely salmon haunt? Couldn't cast to the far bank as the wind was there just too strong for my 3wt line, even from the middle of the river.
There was a small minibus in the parking area when I arrived, and the fishing lodge was occupied with a couple of heavy duty spinning rods set up on the rack outside - didn't see anyone fishing with them & they were still there when I left c. 6pm.

Conditions looked near perfect and we had high hopes for a good day, but that was sitting in the car drivng to the venue. There was the odd fish topping looking down on the river by the chalet accompanied by a cool breeze. That was all we could put it down to was a cool breeze keeping the fish down, still it wasn't a disaster DC took all his fish on the dry and GC on spiders and ptn. Four fin perfect salmon parr and an occasional show by the grown ups get us amused throughout the day.
Many thanks to the Wye and Usk

Perfect Trout conditions, good hatch of Olives and a few Spinners, thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Four fish caught none of any appreciable size, the largest being approx 30cm.

Last day of my week's fishing holiday, first time on Ty-Newydd - stunning beat with glorious views from the fishing lodge. Tried the fast water in Gravelly run to start, but no joy there, so I headed up to just below where the Clettwr joins, and as I arrived the river sprang into life with fish rising & jumping all over. No great visible hatch so I cast my trusty Grayling Steel Blue some 20 yds (no visible rises there) and an almost instant hit resulted in a nice grayling c. 12", next 10 casts all produced almost instant takes, a mixture of grayling & trout between 10"-16" - fantastic sport, all fish in great condition & safely returned.
All went quiet again after that short spell of incredible fishing, amazing how the river can just suddenly switch on & off like that. Went home tired but happy, great end to the week - will be bback to try the rest of this beat soon!

As today was forecast to be the first for some time with cloud and hardly any wind, I decided to give the Upper Wye a go. The weather forecast proved to be right and even the light rain around midday arrived on time. However, after the recent heatwave the water was a warm 18 degrees! There was little fly (some yellow mays, a few small olives, and sedges from 4 p.m.) and just a few rises throughout the day. In spite of that, the ladies certainly obliged and at least some were looking up, as were a few trout. Most rising fish took the flies offered, but most of the fish caught were non-risers which happened to take a fancy to small light and dark olive Duck's Duns, a hare's ear emerger, Grayling Steel Blue and Baby Sunfly. A couple of fish were also taken on nymphs though nymphing wasn't very successful, either fished alone or duo. The trout ranged from 8-12" and the grayling were mainly of 9-10", with a few 12" and one 14" fish thrown in for good measure. Not sure where the larger grayling had gone. Maybe they weren't on the feed? Oh for a chat with a grayling! Dream on.

Again a second visit to this beat but unfortunately over night rain increased river level to about 2 feet with very coloured water. Tried an hour Polish nymphing but couldn't get into the main stream as current too strong. Glad to know it was the river conditions not the fishing
that beat me this time.

Water quite low & limited amount of water fishable with the fly. Nothing seen nor touched unfortunately.
