Having failed to catch a salmon at Gromain on Friday, Karen and I had a second attempt on the beat above on Saturday. With pleasant weather and the water at about 12" on Llanstephan gauge we were both optimistic. I managed a coloured hen of perhaps a little over 10lbs from the lower end of the top planks, deftly unhooked and released in the water by Karen without any handling. Despite fishing 'til dusk it was the only salmon for the day. Karen did manage a nice grayling of about 1.5lbs on a CDC emerger during a break from swinging the double-hander. Another highly enjoyable day on a picturesque beat.

River quite high and coloured. Managed only a couple of takes before I lost my footing in front of the Lower Planks section and dropped my rod into deep water. Hopefully, it may appear when the river levels fall! If anyone retrieves a Guideline Fario 4 weight with Hardy reel I'd be grateful if you let me know on 01235 816861 or inform the Wye and Usk foundation. Many thanks. Roy Pettipher.

Yesterdays rain put the river up and coloured (level with the top of the boards)gave it a few hours but caught nothing. Couldn't even get to the spots I wanted to.

A very good day, starting at 11a.m. I was into four grayling on GRHE nymph on the first four casts! However, they soon dried up as the fish started to rise. Various dries were tried to no avail, there were a lot of small brown ephemerids hatching - not sure what they were (anybody?). A change to a Grayling Steel Blue was the answer and by 4p.m. I had released 14 grayling to 1.5lb plus two out of season WBT, all at the bottom of the beat, in the pool above Lower Planks.

Fished the whole beat from 10 until dusk. A few fish rising to olives but only one landed. Lovely beat with a great variety of water.

Fine weather but cooler today. Quite a strong cold upstream wind blowing all day. Again fished several locations but very little surface activity observed so reverted to downstream nymph fishing to take one small grayling.
Witnessed one very large salmon jump clear of the water some 400 metres downstream of Ty-Newydd fishing lodge.
Many thanks for arranging beat access for the two locations fished this week.

My annual pilgrimage to the upper Wye on a beautiful, golden autumn day found the river low and quite clear. This is a beat I have not fished before and was surprised at the easy access. In saying that, however, great care is needed when wading over the rounded, slimy stones before reaching gravel bars from whence casting is easier. I had an impromptu bath and bruised my arm so beware! I found fish in the white water fishing across and down with black spiders. I did not have any luck elsewhere using klink and dink or dry fly. Nonetheless it would be difficult not to enjoy this majestic river and its environs and I'll be back next year for more of the same.

Another dry and bright day but with more breeze and no hatches to speak of. Nymphs proving more successful than dry patterns although fish were still taken on dry patterns when very occasional rises spotted.
