Lovely day. Water clear and low (4" on Brecon gauge)and 60F. 3 fish caught, best 2 3/4lbs, 2 on nymphs and one on dry fly. There was a steady trickle of LDOs and smaller olives. All fish returned.

Another lovely day on this most beautiful of beats. There are so many lies for salmon and hiding places for trout. I returned to this beat in the hope of not seeing bathers and dogs and children. I was disappointed!! Even during the evening rise there was a constant stream of people jumping and swimming with their dogs. More poachers seen too by the bridge. No wonder there are no salmon.

Lovely day and a beautiful stretch of river. Some fish rising but difficult to tempt with dry fly. Sedge and small duns about plus some yellow mays. Tried most things but perhaps my presentation was a bit too poor for the low, clear water and I probably could have gone finer. Had an 8 inch fish on a size 12 nymph when I tried to re-cast at one point. Nothing, then, until dusk came to my rescue when, in the failing light, a 10 - 11 inch fish sipped down a tups. When tightening into this fish the end of my vintage 1936 Hardy split cane rod snapped off!! It must have been ready to go. So 2 hard won fish.

Glan-yr-Afon is the most beautiful stretch of river in the British Isles and one day I will catch a salmon there, but today I had to be content with the largest brown trout I have ever caught - at 20" long - which put up a pretty good impersonation of it's senior cousin for 15 minutes. I put it back, just in case some of its offspring choose to head downstream to the sea. Water conditions perfect at 10" on the Brecon gauge and I was fishing the top pool.

Only intended to fish the evening rise and I knew that this beat would still have some decent water in it.

Arrived a 7pm with the sun shining straight down the river so I went to the Red Lion for a pint.

Returned about 8:15 and worked my way upstream eventually arrived at the run about half/two thirds way up with fishing starting to rise . Had a frantic half hour from 9pm, landed one fish of around 12 inches, lost three others and loads of missed takes.

Left around 9:30pm, this is not the kind of beat you want to wade in the dark !

As I worked my way back down stream I saw no other fish rising. Just goes to show that you have to find the fish.

Thanks as always to the Wye and Usk team.
