After hard and successful yards the previous day at Ashford, a couple of late morning hours witnessed the first magical rise of the season for me of trout to olive. 2.5 fish caught on olive emerger.

Glorious spring day with the river at just the right height. Fished only the upper beat. Landed one 12 inch trout, hooked and lost 3 others of about the same size. Good hatch of LDOs at around 1pm with a few fish rising from the depths to take them sporadically. Jingler seemed to be the fly that appealed. A wonderful close encounter with a young otter who was very curious to find out what I was. I don't understand why there is any need to stock this beat as there appear to be good numbers of wild trout - don't most people fishing WUF beats prefer catch and release of wild fish ? Fortunately it hadn't been stocked yet this season.

A stunning stretch of water. Quiet on the fishing front but impossible not to appreciate being able to fish there

A quiet year for salmon on the Usk we understand. 3 trout took impossibly large flies but not the intended quarry.

River level a bit low but had a great day. One or two tugs on the line - next time I will return with trout rod.

A breezy evening fly fishing on the lower beat with plenty of cloud and the odd shower. River falling and clear with a brown stain. Fishing an Usk Grub had one small grilse on and off after two quick leaps at the Fishing Green and a few trout going for the salmon fly after the recent rain.
An exciting evening on a great piece of fly water.

Extremely hot day, (30 degrees plus) conditions bright. Unsurprisingly, no trout seen or taken. Expensive day for no return, but compensated somewhat but the stunning setting. The river suffers in general (in these conditions) by the open public footpath which enables too many swimmers and dog walkers access to the river. Echo sentiments of the Australian traveler re access to Wifi and printer. We were staying on the canal, hence delay in submitting return. Completed as soon as able.

The river was running high after rain the previous day and 3 anglers who had booked through the estate had struggled the day before. Quite a cool overcast day for July and very little fly life with barely any rising fish at all. I fished from 11am until 5pm without a touch and then found the right fly and some willing fish. Fly of the day was a hot spot pheasant tail nymph fished under an Elk Hair caddis. Fish all taken tight to the bank next to trees or along the edges of the fast water. Highlight of the day was a cracking fish of 17 inches, must have been 2 pounds or more. All fish returned. I will be back.
