Very difficult day, intermittent hatches of olives and a few March Browns throughout the middle part of the day but the fish didn't really respond with the occasional fish showing once but no more. Resorted to nymphing without success but neither of us are experts. Still a lovely place to spend the day though.

A difficult day today, weather mostly overcast and cold with a brisk wind at times. A gorgeous place to be but neither of us caught today. Back in May so hopefully things will have warmed up by then.

We kept this stretch for our last day because it is our favourite. two of us headed downstream as there was not much showing and fished with nymphs without success. Before lunch a few fish rose but refused to take our offering. after lunch all three (brothers) of us fished above the bridge managing a few tentative rises but not connecting with anything. late on my younger brother swung his wets below the bridge which accounted for a couple of knocks .

Bright sunny day, not a cloud in the sky and the water was lovely and clear, reading 11C. Lots of olives coming off the water from mid-morning until late afternoon and a good March Brown hatch twenty minutes either side of noon, but no trout rising to them. Found one fish rising later in the afternoon and covered it with a CDC olive which it took and spat out, the feel of the hook obviously put it off and there were no more rises.
With all the fly life and balmy sunshine we were tempted to use dries for a while, but with nothing happening we switched to nymphs, going through plenty of colour, size and weight combinations. Two trout of around 9" and one about 5" resulted, all returned. Hard work, but neither of us are accomplished nymphers - I suspect someone who knows what they're doing with a czech nymphing rig would have done much better in the pocket water.
Lovely surroundings and the estate pub does very good bacon sandwiches.

After hard and successful yards the previous day at Ashford, a couple of late morning hours witnessed the first magical rise of the season for me of trout to olive. 2.5 fish caught on olive emerger.

Glorious spring day with the river at just the right height. Fished only the upper beat. Landed one 12 inch trout, hooked and lost 3 others of about the same size. Good hatch of LDOs at around 1pm with a few fish rising from the depths to take them sporadically. Jingler seemed to be the fly that appealed. A wonderful close encounter with a young otter who was very curious to find out what I was. I don't understand why there is any need to stock this beat as there appear to be good numbers of wild trout - don't most people fishing WUF beats prefer catch and release of wild fish ? Fortunately it hadn't been stocked yet this season.

A stunning stretch of water. Quiet on the fishing front but impossible not to appreciate being able to fish there

A quiet year for salmon on the Usk we understand. 3 trout took impossibly large flies but not the intended quarry.
