We booked the beat hoping to catch a mild spell but frosty fields and 3° air temp greeted us. With 1.24mt of water it was going to be difficult but three chub saved the day.

Again very cold, minus 2 when arrived, fished until 3.15pm but no bites at all. Had a chat with Colin who was very helpful but the weather was against me. Will return.

I covered quite a few swims looking for an odd fish here and there and as the chub weren't feeding (due to the very brown water?), was content with three bites and three barbel to 7lb. A sparrow hawk took a redwing from the sky at high speed just yards from me, there's always so much to see when the fishing is quiet.

The day started off with the first real frost of the season and with temperature below freezing it was going to be hard conditions. This was my fist time fishing the Wye and was looking for my first Barbel on my Birthday.
The bank was very slippery an some swims very muddy. I fished the last swim near the Island and cut. I would of needed waders or high wellies to fish over the cut as the water was high. I caught one small barbel (my first) around 2.5lbs that I was very happy with, on pellets and feeder early on. The water was coming though fast and made it very hard work.
I will come back to the Wye again in the summer and hope to catch more barbel. I had a great day all the same and a great birthday catching my first river Wye barbel.
Thank you.

With the river carrying over a metre of floodwater, it was a difficult day. Two barbel around six pounds and three chub responded to our pellet and feeder tactics and it was a real pleasure to be fishing. A chat with Colin rounded off a very enjoyable session.

I had hoped to fish the lower end of the beat but the water level was over the path just round the corner so I settled into a swim nearer the start of the beat. G went to his usual swim about half way down. The water level was slowly dropping and fining down. After a while with no bites at all fishing the feeder I decided to move downstream and try the swims near the corner. G had managed to catch two good chub with one approaching 7lbs.
After a blank 2 hours we returned to my original swim. G found a rock on the bottom and lost his end tackle. While he was making repairs I managed to catch 2 good chub and a barbel in quick succession. G then hooked a barbel which immediately took him under the rock and another set of tackle was lost. G gave up in disgust as dusk was approaching while I managed to add another couple of big chub as night and the rain all too quickly fell around me.
The last hour saved the day.

Heavy overnight air frost and a river that had risen 1.2m overnight produced 1 bite, an eel. Despite fishing 4 pegs that have previously produced with extra water no other bites. Roll on next year.
