Very slow day, with only one baby chub caught. Fished both ends of the stretch. The slowest day I have experienced on the Wye in six years. The main theories for the slow fishing are either the fish being turned off by the flood water / waiting to spawn or not being there to catch. I do not know the answer at this stage, but will persevere.

The river was higher than summer levels after rain and fining down over the whole weekend. Very little weed in the river. Conditions looked good, but the fish were not playing ball. We tried several swims along the whole stretch from the deeper water at the top to the shallows below the footbridge with just one small and solitary chub to show for it. Very disappointing.

Difficult day, trying several swims without much response from the fish. Caught one small barbel and a small chub on pellets. Not sure if the barbel are grouping up to spawn somewhere outside this beat, or are here but not feeding much due to the brown murky water. Time will tell.

Fished the middle part of the beat, where there is respite from the faster water conditions. Caught 2 barbel to 6lb-14oz and 3 average size chub. Lashing 30 minute rainstorms at 4pm and 6pm had the water turning brown / red with so much mud going into the river. The river is probably too murky for really good fishing at the moment, so fairly pleased to catch a few fish.

Lovely cool river on arrival. Fish showing, including a silver bar well into double figures. I've not fished the Wye much in the past but it was lower than I have known it and stayed constant through the day. Early confidence not realised but I did have one long, gentle pull which came to nothing. Tried a variety of flies from size 12 up to a 3 1/2 inch sunray. Great to see so much activity. Met the owner again who was very helpful and encouraging.

I made the mistake of booking this beat on a sunny day. The best of the fly water is also the most popular with the stick throwing dog walkers, picnicking families who are too busy lighting the barbeque to notice the children killing fry by hurling rocks at them in the margins and, later in the evening, the swimmers.
I was very patient but after a while I just gave up. I won’t be booking this beat again.

Another lovely day at Caradoc albeit without a Salmon. The other residents kept me on my toes though, in particular Chub upto 5lbs. A surprise Perch of 1lb 8oz was also taken and 2 shad hooked but lost. Salmon were seen and more so in the evening rather than the morning. Thanks again for a lovely day on the water.
