Fishing:Winter Grayling

1 x 11 inch grayling, 2 x out of season trout 10 and 14 inches. A search for the elusive grayling with the trotting rod, and a difficult day really, although I am not quite sure why. The Monnow looked to be in excellent condition.

2 trout 6-8 inches taken on mayfly and 3 very small grayling. Very pleasant day, if a little cold, but with very few takes.

A pleasant days fishing, although I failed to connect with any fish, I must be getting old! Managed to provoke a few takes on a CDC emerger pattern, access difficult as usual but not impossible and its always good to work for your fishing! I was also somewhat surprised and disappointed to have the company of a pair of cormorants on the beat!

Considering the conditions, I was somewhat relieved to manage one 8" trout on a GRHE and a very surprised 1 1/2lb chub on a Klink! River very low and in need of some rain. Access difficult as expected, a wading staff is good for the balsam, I shall be trying again after we have had some rain.

A warm sunny day, a beautiful river and four trout caught ... beats watching England play! Two smaller ones (8-9") came mid morning and two larger fish late afternoon - the first 13", the second 15". Not much hatching; the odd mayfly and olive, but no quantity. A few fish rising, but infrequently and hard to tempt ... at least with my skill level. Tried various patterns through the day, but all fish came to a Greenwells.

Warm bright afternoon and evening 23-24C. Lots of insect activity including the occasional Mayfly, which the trout ignored totally. The trout rose freely to any small dark traditional fly provided it had a tail and despite slow responses on my part five 6"-9" were hooked and released.

Calling the access to the water as "tricky" in the beat description is something of an understatement, downright difficult would be more accurate. Or am I getting old?

10 x wild trout, 2 around 14-15 inches, most around 8-10 inches, Klinkhammer to begin and Hackle Mayfly later. A rather muddy river after showers the previous evening - the Monnow colours so easily these days - plus I had a photographer with me from Total Flyfisher so no pressure! But trout were prepared to rise and we had a very nice afternoon. The last of the mayfly for this year, I should think, and as usual I turned over and missed a couple of the larger ones.

8 brown trout caught on dry fly, one of which was approximately 1.5 pounds in weight, the rest less than half a pound in weight. A good early afternoon of fishing but subsequently quiet into the evening with few takes.

7 x trout 10-15 inches on various mayfly patterns. A nice dry fly day with fish rising well under the trees despite the heat. As always at Monnow Valley, actually getting at the fish is half the battle. Not a huge mayfly hatch in terms of numbers, but enough to interest the fish in big flies through the afternoon.
