Arrived at 10am, weather was overcast and warm followed by some sun before clouding over with a heavy shower or two. I fished Island Run and Rock Pool till 2pm. A lovely bit of river with quite easy wading upto about waist deep. There was very little surface activity to begin with but a fish topped just upstream of where I'd entered the water which I took on a mayfly dry on my second cast, a promising start! I then tied a gold head nymph New Zealand style to my CDC winged mayfly which I ran through Island Run taking fish on both flies but mostly to the nymph.
A few flies of various varieties could now be seen emerging but not in enough numbers to get the trout excited, although I did find a few fish rising between me and the near bank, I hooked one before it shook the hook free and spent quite a few minutes trying to tempt another which steadfastly refused all I threw at it! A very pleasant few hours, 10 trout and 2 Grayling all of a very good average size, except one small Grayling, biggest trout 15 inches, all released.

2 10" trout caught on black goldhead nymphs and a 4lb. chub below the bridge which led me a merry dance!
Conditions seemed perfect.
Several fish rising above the bridge but I couldn't tempt them, I'm a very inept dry fly angler. 4 Mayfly seen.

An hour and a half's very enjoyable fishing on the Rectory starting around 3pm. An array of insects were coming off - mayflies, yellow mays, various olives, stoneflies and sedges with trout rising sporadically to them. The water was still quite coloured after the weekend's rain, which meant we could get very close to the fish without detection. Sharing a rod we had 14 wild browns to hand using cdc olive emergers and parachute Adams, and missed twice as many more. The fish were all around the 3/4 pound to a pound mark although there were some bigger ones rising just out of wading/casting range (of course!).
Trout fishing on the upper Wye should be at its best over the next few days with the water still carrying some colour.

Started at 1pm and had four enjoyable hours at the Rectory. Little surface activity but a few fish rising in the flats. Most of the fish came to nymph in the fast water, the largest (15") going airborne before I even knew it was hooked! Some of the trout were quite lean but all put up a good fight. Lots of salmon smolts caught, all of which were unhooked and released swiftly without being handled.

Beautiful location, cold unfortunately but we will be back again. 3 of us fishing, I was fishing under the road bridge and blanked. One of my brothers was fishing approximately 50 yards up stream from me and caught 1 trout and 1 Grayling. My other brother was fishing about 20 yards up stream from him and caught 7 Trout and 7 Grayling. They will not let me forget this until we come back next year.

A lovely first day out for the 2016 season, river looked good at 1' 5" but sorry to report no sign of a salmon. Good hatch of olives at lunch time and trout rising all over the tail of the Rectory pool for about an hour. Will be back soon.

Smashing days fishing, banks very clogged up with willow trees and flood debris made movement very difficult, challenging. Lovely day though would do it again.
