This was an introduction to fly fishing for a complete beginner and a reintroduction for relative novice. Despite 20mph westerlies and the occasional downpour, we had a fantastic day on The Rectory, catching consistently throughout on nymphs and dry flies. The Rock Pool at the top end of the beat was more sheltered so we fished that and the Bridge Flats, where trout and grayling rose to small CDC emergers. The slightly coloured water no doubt helped but all-in-all, we couldn't have asked for a better result.

Salmon Parr caught in the island swim, 3 small brown trout caught either side of the bridge. River was higher than normal and quite coloured following heavy rainfall. Water quality was poor and smelt quite unpleasant, insect life in the river appeared low with very few fish rising at all even well into the evening.

No fish taken.

Just fished a few hours pm while I was trying out some gear. Still very low even after the recent rain, but not too coloured.
Nothing seen.

Considering the recent rises in water have been only a couple of inches, I was amazed at the colour of the river. The margins are clear in the slacks, but the river bed is covered in brown silt and the main river is carrying a lot of silt and is a dirty brown colour.

Thank you so much for today. Had a lovely time despite the rain!! Caught 2 trout (both returned) One excellent fish just under 2lb and one about 1/2 lb. But the highlight of the day w as 2 Salmon moving in the Rectory pool!! One, a very good fish over 20lb but quite coloured came completely out of the water 3 times while I was working the pool!! Another smaller fish about 10lb much lower in the pool was showing too!!
Once again many thanks,

2 Trout
