The river looked promising today having cleared a little more since yesterday. No salmon caught or seen though. Still, a lovely autumn day to be on beat.

Fledgling salmon angler at work. No takes on red francis or willie gunn variant. One salmon, about 2' long leapt in front of the hut.
Switched to a black and yellow tubefly which brought a take, close to spot where salmon seen. Brief heart stopping moment but just a lively small trout.

Fished the whole beat today, river clearing and 1’6” on the gauge. A small coloured cock fish soon after starting, and a few OOS trout further down the pool to the same fly. Fished until dark with no further offers, but did see a fish show in the Ferry late afternoon. Soaking wet all all day after too many slips and stumbles. From the top of Dolmeudwy. Small orange Francis .
Guesstimate 6lb.

The river was around 2ft most of the day. It was coloured, but plenty of visibility for fish to see the fly and it continued to clear into the evening. I fished systematically through many of the best pools, but no takes and no fish showing. I was using sink 3 and 1 inch to 1.5 inch tubes (Francis, snaelda etc.). Surprised not to have found a fish given favourable conditions. Perhaps a touch on the high side to get the best from the fly although very fishable. Anyway lovely day on the river casting with the kingfishers, dippers and other friendly anglers.

Last visit for me during the trout season started well with an early brown trout caught on old faithful, a copper john. Went quiet for a while, before landing a grayling on a cdc down in the ferry pool. An hour of comedy followed with tangle after tangle and a moment of madness where I got both flies caught in my waistcoat, prompting me to consider throwing everything into the heirag.
A cup of tea, a sandwich and a stern word with myself brought me back from the brink with a team of traditional wets and a further six fish. Mostly small, although one of the grayling and a second trout were worthy of respectability and placement in the middle weight division.
Weather was pleasant with intermittent sunshine. I shall return when the leaves fall and fish for grayling.

2 Trout, 5 Grayling, 1 Other
