Bright sunny and hot, water low and gin clear so not easy but good response to long line (French) nymphing. Surprisingly sparse hatch, few LDO,a few March brown and very few rises even later in the day. However, no complaints with 10 trout all taken on a small black tungsten head nymph. All a good size and largest to 14 ins.

Fish returned. Bright day with river low and clear. Nothing rising at all despite a trickle of olives hatching through the day.

I was guided by the excellent Oliver Burch. With his help, four trout between 10" and 14" landed, and a few more bumped off. Water getting low after a two week dry spell. Disappointing hatches, despite bright warm sun, possibly due to cold easterly wind. All four fish caught on spiders; few fish rising and those that were, weren't tempted by different flies.

Started in the run at the very bottom of the beat around 10.30 and had a series of fish in the riffles, mostly 8-10 inches. Hooked and lost a good sized fish in the waterfall at the top of the riffles. by 1 p.m. the activity had calmed. 3 fish hooked and lost at the top end of the beat, but overall an enjoyable day which could have been trimmed to 10:30 t 14:00.

This is a really great fishery, great location, scenery and plenty of fish in lots of sections of the beat. Although I landed 4 fish (2 no. 8-9" and 2 no. 10-12")I was having one of those days. I hooked over a dozen, the rest of which all came off the hook before netting. I kept the line taught, checked the hooks (barbless); they were sharp, I changed the flies and still the fish kept coming off! I was obviously doing something wrong, perhaps striking away from the fish but they all stayed on for a while before un-hooking themselves... Very tricky conditions today, windy with strong gusts, this beat is quite exposed, making casting a 4# with a team of spiders an a 16' leader tough and managing the line / detecting takes difficult.

This was our first time on this river and what a great beat. The weather was sunny, with an upstream wind.
There were very few rising fish, but I did tempt one to a dry, however the other three came to a beaded PTN.
Not an easy day, but the challenge is why we do it! I wonder how the Heron was getting on, he did look well fed!
Thanks WUF for the great work that you guys do, and for picking this beat for us. This beat has quite a nice variety of water to challenge us all!

Pleasantly warm with hazy sunshine all day and temp to over 20C. A brief and sparse hatch between noon and 1pm. Fish less and less responsive as afternoon progressed. Brassy sun and downstream breeze a hindrance. Took a leisurely approach to the fishing, spending time chatting with an old friend and munching local pork pies, so caught 5 trout. The best two were 1lb 8oz and 1lb 12oz, the others less than a pound.

The weather was warm and very bright, with unbroken sun and no cloud cover. Unfortunately there was also a persistent cold downstream wind which killed any hope of a hatch despite the river being at a perfect height.
We managed to rise a few trout to a variety of dry flies, but the fish mostly turned under the fly. Finally we caught (on dry and on nymph), but it was a frustrating day, typical of early season fishing.
