12 x trout 8-16 inches, spiders. A mostly cloudy day as a weak front came over, with a very cold and blustering downstream wind. The river is still pretty full. Nothing at all seen hatching for most of the time (although the previous evening, the A40 at Monmouth bridge was covered with migrating grannom, on their way upstream or to Gloucester, not sure which). However, it seems the trout were scanning the surface too, and a few modest ones were prepared to come up for a team of spiders fished blind through the runs. Mid-afternoon, a very few march browns came off and I was able to get a couple of decent fish on a pool tail.

Glorious day !
Arrived around 10.00am, fished the duo from the parking area to the bottom of the sewage pool. Looked very fishy but fish thought otherwise. Tried some deep nymphing in the bottom pool, no luck.
Then fished the duo in the stretch near the bottom fence enclosed by two outcrops of bed rock. 5 fish in 2 hours lost 2 landed 3, all on a ptn below a Klink. Very lively fish, all around 10oz. Stockies?
Nothing that could be described as a hatch, and no fish seen rising to the occasional fly that did come off the water.
I Lost my Gerber multi tool at or near the parking area, maybe on the bank when making a brew. If anyone finds it please advise W&U.
Thanks to Alison for her normal excellent service!

Four fish hooked, 2 (WBT 10" & 16") caught; river very coloured from overnight rain. Should have claimed a wash off, after a very long drive and the thought of a wasted journey. I decided to fish the seams close to the bank where the water started to clear. Access to clearer water approx 200 metres remainder coffee coloured and unfishable. Fished PTN and GRHE on long leader and tippet 16ft all fish caught on PTN.

WUF note - Wash-offs are issued at the descression of the Foundation and owners when the river is deemed completely unfishable. Given conditions and that 4 fish were hooked and 2 caught, unfortunately a wash off would not have applied here.

A very heavy and lengthy burst of rain during the early morning was not welcome!
On arrival the river looked high and fast, but 'fishable', so in I went. During the morning I watched the river rise quite rapidly and with that came lots of debris, changing the water from being relatively clear to the colour of coffee.
I pressed on but saw no fish and caught nothing - but this is still a wonderful beat to spend a day on!
Be back in a few weeks.

River low. Bright sunshine. I focused on pools in the upper section above the parking area with no success. Met the owner who kindly gave me some useful advice on good taking spots, with a request to look out for poachers. Two seen on the opposite bank spinning through a pool. They slunk into the bushes when I called out.
Many thanks to the Wye & usk Foundation for a great service. Lets hope the Salmon get enough water to make it to the redds.

Although river very low and hardly any flow in Llanobery pool I bought a Salmon ticket, so gave it a go for a few hours. No Salmon caught or seen. As there seemed to be lots of trout rising I swapped my Salmon gear for my trout rod and landed a lovely 12" Usk Trout on second cast, followed by at least another 9, all from Llanobery pool, all about 12". Great fighters. All returned. As always a great service from Wye & Usk.

Fished the previous day at Chainbridge in vain for salmon so fished for trout instead. The beat here is particularly beautiful with abundant wildlife which makes a wonderful place to get away from it all. The trout were particularly wily here but eventually took three small wild browns using a daddy long legs fished on the surface. The trout here are particularly abundant but with the river in spate some of the deeper lies would hold good salmon too. All in all a wonderful days fishing and will certainly be back!
