Bright sunshine all day, river high and very clear. Just a few small olives seen, only two trout seen rising. Tried both nymphs and duo, nothing caught.

After a week of positive catch returns on Dinas, and Brecon gauge at 1' 6", I decided to give it a go. I fished a march brown nymph & hares ear gold head duo on a 10' 3WT in the fast runs and pocket water for 4 1/2 hours. I can't even say I had a couple of knocks, there was nothing moving at all. With a light wind and some bright sun, there was a slow hatch during the day which had a 30 minute hot spot around 2pm with many insects on the surface. Still no fish!

A bright day with a fair few large olives about but no march browns. A few fish rose to the olives on the sheltered top glide, but no surface activity elsewhere. Landed two nice (but fairly lean) trout either side of the pound to an Imperial from this area and one made off with my friend's partridge and orange from the turbulent water at the bottom! Nice to be out.

water up at just under 1ft6 on brecon gauge which made for hairy wading in places , some areas just too powerful to wade safely . all trout came to heavily weighted baetis nymphs. there was a steady hatch somewhere between 1-2pm sadly only a few rises so carried on nymphing. all trout between 12 - 16 inches with five lost to hook pulls in the fast water one of which was heavy

I'd planned on fishing downstream at Llanellen today but on arriving at the water I found it to be too coloured. Through the marvels of technology I could see that river at Brecon was running clear so with the tapping of a few more buttons on my iPhone, it was back to Dinas for the second day running. The river was indeed clear and still a touch on the high side. A good hatch of LDOs from about 11.30 which went on for a good 90 minutes or more. Some fish were rising but they were fussy and very spooky. My usually dependable CDC LDO pattern struggled, perhaps because it had to compete with hundreds of naturals but I managed 4 nice trout (1lb+) and missed a few. Not a single March Brown was spotted today whereas yesterday the same stretch had been littered with them.

I started when the river was 1ft 10 ins on the Brecon webcam and it was carrying quite a bit of colour - more than you would really like for trout. I managed a pounder fishing spiders towards the bottom of the beat but the downstream wind wasn't great. Just a few LDOs appeared and nothing responded so I headed to the top of the beat where there was a lovely hatch of LDOs underway with March Browns in among them, but nothing moving to them. I spotted a sole riser and he took my artifical, so another pounder. By about 2pm the March Brown hatch was pretty heavy and quite steady but nothing moved to them. Then at about 3pm with the river having dropped back a few inches and starting to clear quite nicely the fish switched on for about 15-20 minutes hitting emergers and the odd dun. I pricked two fish and by the time I was ready to target some more, the river went back to sleep. It was always going to be a difficult day but great to see such healthy hatches and no doubt the fish will start to rise in earnest soon.
