Forced off the Usk by the water conditions, we headed to the reservoir. A very difficult days fishing because of the strong gusting NE wind blowing straight into our faces.

I booked a days fishing as it has been a long while since I have fly fished in the Brecon Beacons. What magnificent scenery and such a vast expanse of water which was clean with a hint of deep brown colour. With a South Westerly wind and good waves everything was set for a good days sport. Having wilderness fished before my tactics were to cast and move with a team of traditional small dark flies.
However, after 8 hours of fishing, nothing, I hadn't even seen a trout. Plenty of minnows but not even a rise anywhere!
I have been to many wilderness waters and never have I seen NO fish, I've paid £14.50 for what was an extreamly poor days fishing (how can you charge so much? What dictates this fee? What do you do to the water to charge so much? There are put and take waters with a high stocking level that charge the same fee). Sorry but I won't be back to this water and suggest that any monies made (including mine) buys some fingering brown trout to put into the water for future anglers to at least see a fish .
You are the custodians of such an ideal water and as such have the responsibility to look after the future fishing for the anglers of tomorrow.
I hope you take something in from my comments and wish your club and it's waters good future fishing.
WUF note: The Fishing Passport only markets the Day Tickets for this water and is not responsible for it's management. Reviewing some of the catch returns for this water shows that fish are caught here on a regular basis. It is 'Wild Trout' fishery and therefore relies on natural reproduction of wild fish.

Cold wind and rained all day long! 2 brown trout approx. 10" taken on a goldhead black Zulu. Unfortunately the weather conditions made it very unpleasant. However, Wye and Usk Foundation booking office were most cooperative.

4 x trout 9-15 inches. An early evening session, short-lining a team of three wet flies on the windward shore. The odd lake olive to be seen on the surface. A greased up Kate Maclaren on the top dropper provoked most interest with a wet Greenwells and Harry Tom fished lower down. I had planned to fish till dusk, but unfortunately the wind dropped to a flat calm around 7.30, the fish moved out of range - and the biting midges moved in. Two WUF anglers, fellow refugees from flooded rivers, arrived later and hopefully found some success before dark.

I fished for a few hours in the afternoon and caught one nice fish just over a pound. There were a few fish moving but conditions were fairly horrible with the wind and rain.

Fished Talybont for about three and a half hours on Sunday evening from four o clock. Dark and dirty with a fair bit of rain. but got five good quality browns (all returned) on claret muddler, yorkie and sedgehogs. Not a lot of fly about but the odd fish showing in the surface.

I had put in more hours than I would care to remember at Talybont last year with more failure than I would care to admit. This time, planning to fish for a few hours before driving on to camp near Brecon, I had loosened up for barely 10 minutes when I lifted into a gentle taker just a few yards out.
After a long fight with much line taken and later several jumps at closer range, this handsome fish finally lay on its side and the netting was easy. At 2lb 9oz it made this three-day trip before it had really begun. A top dropper Kate McLaren was responsible. One further savage take further down the bank followed.
For Upper Usk fishers stymied by the weather Talybont, though not easy, is a fascinating choice. The following day I also enjoyed Crai Reservoir (south of Sennybridge and very popular with cuckoos for some reason) though the east bank gives very limited access to the water beyond the gorge. Keep well above the water for quicker, safer access to the far (west) bank, and be aware the dam may not be crossed, which means a long, ankle-testing walk back! Bring £12 cash in an envelope with car details and go through Cnewr Farm archway (on main road near dam) to post in box just inside the courtyard on the right.

Weather was abysmal, heavy rain and gales for most of the day. Fished nymphs in the morning, missed one take on a hare's ear. Switched to lures when casting anything lighter became impossible. Caught 2 trout, both returned.
