All fish caught on dry fly. First time on the Lugg - river looked like it could do with a bit more depth to it but was still a great day. Trout were small but lively, grayling about 1lb.

2 Trout, 1 Grayling

Last time out I lost one of my felt soles from my wading boots so, as I haven't had chance to repair them yet, I needed a beat I could fish in wellies. This beat is perfect for that, although the wooded areas would require waders. Saw a number of fish in the low water conditions but couldn't tempt any with my offerings. Lots of parr splashing at the fly and two of these were the only fish to stick; one on an emerger the other on a nymph.
There was a good variety of fly life around from tiny midges and small upwings to huge daddies. Lovely stretch of river with lots of variety. I'll certainly return.

2 Other

Two grayling about 9 inches and one trout 8 inches, all taken on dry fly all fish returned. River very low

Big inquisitive cows, river to its bones, no fish rising to the fly or intrested in any nymphs. Otherwise quite a pleasant day.

A great location, easy to find and good parking in Gilberts farm yard.
The river Lugg was at a good level, it was raining in the morning so used a medium sink with north country spiders. I had one decent Grayling and then once the sun came out I went with a floating line and used a dry green wells and got 2 nice brown trout.
I would certainly fish this location again.

Probably now unfishable without some rain. The river is painfully low and as a result almost still in places, where it does speed up it fails to cover your boots. Lots of fry in the water - caught one about the length of my thumb!

Avoiding the curious cows, who were also out and followed me round the fields, gave another dynamic.

Fish rising to fly but no takes! Cattle in the water at Gilberts Farm, but very hot day.

A truly hot summers day, so had an early morning fish until 10.30am - nothing showed and nothing caught, then went back again for the evening. Some lovely baby OOS grayling gave great sport, but nothing bigger than quarter to half pound.

3 Grayling

A really enjoyable day, all three taken on black buzzer but very few fish showing. A very lovely beat, actually saw two kingfishers and a red kite. Will definitely be giving it a try later in the season for a grayling.

3 Trout

Being of reasonable competence when it comes to Trout fishing I dismissed the previous feedback reports of very few fish but do have to say in comparison to other small rivers there did seem to be a decided lack of Trout activity.
There was a consistent hatch of Mayfly all day but only 3 or 4 rising fish that could be attributed to a grown Trout rather than a parr. After sunset the spinners returned to the water in some numbers but again this resulted in few rises and even then they weren't what you would consider consistent. That said, the fish I would consider to be grown Trout certainly made an impact when they did rise showing that there are fish here of a good size even if few in numbers. I did manage 5-6 good takes to my fly but failed to keep a hook hold (or even prick most of them) finishing the day with just one Brownie in the net(a small but spirited little fighter about 12" long).
Nymphing would bring different results but I am a steadfast dry-fly angler when on the rivers.
For those of you who also decide to walk the full length of the beat, wear long trousers and long sleeves and be prepared to get nettle rash! At the top end of the river they were 6' high and even a day after my hands still don't feel right. Getting nettle rash is an occupational hazard.
I'd also suggest you don't leave your bag by the river. It's in a remote part of the world so it's unlikely to get stolen but the local cows do like a game of football with it!!! Apparently they also find the sleeves of a fleece jacket tasty as well. You live and learn.
