Decided to give the Whittern beat a bash , thinking it would be pushing through at a fair old pace , and when I parked up by the bridge , the flow was pushing through pretty quick , with a bit of colour.

Tackled up with my six foot two weight , a team of two very small suggestive tungsten nymphs thinking they may get down a bit in the water . I did grapple down to the waterside , and watched the water for a while , no rises at all . . . . . And yet there were quite a few olives about , and also hawthorn flies , bumbling clumsily around !!!!

The bottom half of the beat seemed fairly quiet to be honest , and it was a while and a couple of pools later , before I had a good take on my tungsten nymph by a five inch brownie , cracking colouration fighting well above its weight !!!!

Two more followed in the next hundred yards or so , both about eight or nine inches , carefully wading upstream . By midday , the water seemed to be clearing just a tad . . . . . Takes seemed to be very tentative , and I missed a few in succession , just a slight nudge on the line !!!!

My fourth fish was my best of the day at about ten inches , again another beautifully marked brownie , took my tungsten nymph confidently . I'm sure the water fining down made the trout more eager to take .

This is a cracking beat , and some fabulous water , would have been better had I perhaps left it another day , no trout looking up yet on this stretch , come on guys time to get into training , it's mayfly time soon . . . . . . .

Shall give the Arrow another crack in perhaps a couple of weeks , and I'm sure as always it'll seem totally different then , something like Belize !!!! But hey these wild streams are always great fun , was happy with the four feisty little fighters , a fun four hours , spot on !!!!!!!

The wind and rain finally held off for a few hours so I had a day just fishing the top half of the beat to the end. There's some great stretches here with easy access and casting. A few tiny flies hatching, not enough to bring on a rise, but there were a few rising and I managed to catch 8 trout, one a good 14 or 15 inches. All took a small size 16 emerger pattern.

A disappointing day for me. Cloudy, drizzly showers, cool, downstream wind. River low and clear. Hooked and lost one fish at about 10:30am (the silver flash as it rolled off suggests perhaps a grayling) but didn't see another fish for the next 6 hours. River conditions? Low stocks? Or just me? In One or two places trees have fallen right across the river necessitating an difficult exit. In one case up in the Lyonshall woods, that had to be on the wrong bank but I'm sure that was Ok.

Tough going with low water and the annoying down stream wind has returned.
I only fished half the beat up to the train station where I called it a day after losing my fly to a tree.
3 Trout 6,8 and 10 inches 1 on a nymph and 2 to a soft hackle dry.
Still a few Mayfly hatching.

A quick evening visit on the way back home and river was rattling along nicely with a freshet from the recent rains and also carrying a fair tinge of colour and the bed where you could see it has had a nice flush out. Could be good this week I guess !
Nothing much moving on top but some huge olive spinner clouds buzzing around over the river and the swallows and swifts where revelling on them. A size 14 clownshoe caddis got me the one fish so was happy with that.

Fished from 3-7pm, session started very windy and ended very wet, but the river was in excellent condition with a bit more water following recent rains. Started with a small gold head nymph due to the wind and later fished the Klink and dink but only took 1 fish on the Klink! Most fish in the 8-10" range, with one 12"+.
Lovely stretch of river and the top section benefiting from being cleared recently.

2 x anglers fished the morning into early afternoon. The river was very low and clear, saw a couple of trout rise and a couple of fish spook, but otherwise there didn't seem to be any fish in the bits that looked extremely fishy! The fish were probably sat in cover (lots of lovely ranunculus growth, LWD and tree roots about!) or spooking well before we got anywhere near them due to the water conditions and time of day. The couple of trout we did cast to weren't interested in dries and we didn't get anything to take on nymphs in the deep holes. The beat looked like it had been fished all the way through by a couple of anglers very recently so may just have been settling down. A fantastic looking beat with decent access - would like to return when there's a bit more water in the upper section!
