3 very small trout on small goldheads, no grayling caught,
cold wet and windy, with lots of leaves blown off the trees making presentation difficult. Advice etc from foundation was first class.

Booked the day prior through the Booking Office which was helpful as always. Arrived on the day and was introduced to the water by Mr. Picton, who's information proved invaluable due to the length of the beat. River was high. Hardly any fly life was observable and consequently almost nothing was rising. That said, I have no doubt over the abundance of resident fish. Managed to take two brown trout to 16 inches and a chub of just over a foot all on a klinkhammer. I rose a few more, but failed to hook them. A perfectly enjoyable day on a lovely stretch of river that one could easily spend a week. I look forward to returning.

There was a hard frost last night with the air temperature still showing 1C when I arrived. The river looked in good condition though. Dispite a few sunny spells, there was little evidence of insect activity through the day and just the occasional fish rising - to what I never worked out. I fished the top end of the fishery for the first time today. Five grayling and one trout were caught; all around the 10" mark, except for one grayling about 14". Two of the grayling came to dry fly, everything else to a ptn.

We just love this stretch of river. One day we will fish it on one of the really good days when the fish are really on the feed. Having said that, we did manage 12 B.Trout and 3 Grayling between us. Look forward to the next time.

Saturday on the Irfon was better - less wind. We started on the long stretch below the island, close to the hotel & hardly progressed much beyond the Rocks. Dry fly worked well, which suited me. We caught 20 grayling to 2lbs. & 8 trout to 13". 2 salmon parr came to my fly. There are some mink about.

Caught 2 grayling about 12 ins and 1 trout same size. Trout on gold head hares ear, grayling on weighted shrimp - on advice from Mr. Proctor....
River only just beginning to clear and running fast, so quite pleased with the return. All fish returned. Also thanks for the crucial advice from Mr P.

11 x grayling 11-17 inches, 1 x trout 13 inches, dry fly. Slightly slow start after cold night, but fish rising from about 11 o'clock. A warm, bright and very beautiful day, with pods of grayling rising here and there, mostly in the forward areas of the deeper pools. Most of the grayling were a nice size, 13 inches up, and it was so clear, you could watch them rising up for the fly. Perfect Irfon fishing.

An access point about this beat: if you go to the top end, the map shows two alternative parking spots, one by the road and one about 500 yards down an access track. This track, used by shooting parties occasionally I think, has got a bit wild and overgrown over the years and gets damp at the far end, so if you have a 2WD, suggest you leave it up by the road - it's only a few minutes walk extra anyway.
