MB (North Shields) and TP (Suffolk) had our traditional October day at Ty Newydd. TP fished Nymphs in predominately faster water and had a really good day catching 12 Grayling and 5 oos Brown Trout. The best of the Grayling were around 11/2lb. MB spent most of the day fishing dry fly. Very few fish were rising but rose a few to the dry fly. Had 8 Grayling between 8 & 11" from two runs plus 1 oos Brown Trout on the dry. Also had a small Grayling late on to a small gold head. In hindsight should have spent the last couple of hours fishing spiders and/or nymphs as had a few takes in last 20 mins or so fishing this style. This year nymphs beat the dry fly!!

Wow! What a day! My (Karen's) first salmon after four long years of trying. A slightly coloured hen that Dave estimated to be 11 - 12lbs. I didn't know they could fight that hard! It was hooked in Armies Pool on a size 10 fly tied by Dave that was a based on a Tail Fire Shrimp. She was released in the water by Dave and she went away strongly. The river seemed steady from yesterday with the water at around a foot on the gauge.
Throughout the day we were tempted away from salmon fishing by some rising grayling and we had one each on dry flies weighing around 1lb each.
After thinking that salmon were mythical creatures that didn't really exist I am well and truly hooked and will be back next week for more!

5 grayling all about the 10" mark. Four on an olive spider fished as the top dropper in a team of three. The fifth was after switching to dry fly and came to a grey duster.

Although a stunning early autumn day there were tricky conditions - bright blue skies and a brisk upstream wind. Dropped by the evening but then a low angled October sun directly in my back and into salmo's eyes. would imagine this fishes best at around 1'9". No fish touched, caught or seen but a beautiful close to the season.

An interesting day! Fished continental nymph style taking fish every now and again but without ever really getting into the fish. Maybe the grayling haven't shoaled up yet. Shared the beat with two other very nice chaps, one of whom spent an interesting few minutes playing a salmon on his grayling rod!

River was too high to fish the dry fly (always my preferred method) had a very enjoyable day nymphing.

The river was just above 2' on the gauge and slowly dropping when I started fishing but although a satisfactory height for fly fishing, the water was full of silt even though the local streams were running clear. I gather that this is run off from the potato farms upstream - good top soil going to waste. Anyway I didn't have a touch although I did see a resident fish move once.
My wife on the other hand had a very successful day with her watercolour painting!
