Lovely bank, though a lot of people let their dogs of their leashes and they also want to go fishing apparently ?

Good rise around midday, got a little one on a march brown spider on the dropper.

A day that started mild with a light breeze ended with a strong cold northerly. Some trickle hatches of LDOs but a brilliant hatch of March Browns. Rising fish were taking emergers and seemed impossible to tempt. Most fish were taken on spiders.

Some small hatches and fish rising but they were not interested in my dry fly offering. Managed 3 on a wet fly and missed/lost another couple.

Day 2: It felt much warmer than yesterday. A couple of hours spider fishing proved futile.

It was a case of patiently waiting for hatching flies. There was a decent hatch of March browns from 12:30' to 13:00'and then some carried on trickling in the afternoon. Fish were on them, but tricky to find an imitation they liked.

One of us had the misfortune to rise 6 fish and miss all 6, and one of us stalked a serious fish in the 3lb class for over half an hour, hooked it and the hook came off during the ensuing battle. At end of the day we had 4 trout in the net.

The Usk is certainly a river where less is more. It is not about quantity of fish, but quality.

Day 1: Three of us ventured out taking advantage of the high barometric. Glorious weather, sunny, low wind, ideal for casting. Strong sunlight is something that fish do not prefer but it is not so much of an issue in early Spring. The water temperature was 8C. Still on the low side but as the day warmed up a trickle of large dark olives and March browns started hatching after 12:30'.

As usual, fish were difficult to tempt requiring very long leaders, constantly changing flies and delicate presentations. We managed 7 very lively trout, some on dries and some on spiders. A memorable day out in peaceful surroundings.
