A difficult day today, we walked the beat last night and the place was alive with hatching insects and rising trout taking what they could before the swallows took their share. This morning was a different scene with very few insects, the swallows had lost interest and the trout had vanished back into the watery depths. My fishing buddy had one on a gold headed nymph early on and then struggled to get a take although he did rise a few fish to dries later in the afternoon.
First thing in the morning I found a good trout sipping at the surface leaving barely a dimple but showing its dorsal and flicking it's tail as it did so but it was over on the far bank with three different speeds of flow between it and me which pulled my dry fly out of shape every time I got near it. I gave it up as uncatchable and moved on. Several hours later I found myself confronted with the same fish in the same place feeding the same way, by now it was a stunning sunny afternoon and standing in the clear water mid river was a glorious place to be, I tried for the fish again, covering it several times, but then I got my fly to land and drift in the right place just long enough to get a take and I was soon netting a fabulous trout of 20 inches. This was the biggest of the day but I had others of 14 and 15 inches. A difficult but rewarding day on a beautiful stretch of river, will definitely be back for more. Thank you WUF.

River still running quite high for this tricky wading beat, (river temperature is more than refreshing still!)but this year the Usk is fishing extremely well, think water temperatures have remained low. Caught on nymph in pocket and dry in flats. Great to see smaller <6inch trout being caught showing the population of trout thriving as long as we all practice careful catch and release. The Usk is a gem, lets keep it that way.

River running very fast and deep. Not good conditions after a lot of unexpected heavy rain. Not ideal access to this beat as parking in the village can be tricky.

One caught on dry fly one on wet fly. The river looked in perfect condition and the weather was warm, sunny intervals and no rain. There were many flies, mainly olives and sedges on the water but very few fish showing any interest.
We had difficulty finding our way beyond the Flats. Both fish were returned in good condition.
Online service was very good.

We caught two trout, one on a dry fly one on a wet fly. The river looked in perfect condition and the weather was sunny intervals with no rain. There were plenty of flies hatching and drifting along the river, both upwing flies and sedges but the trout didn't seem interested in them. We found the banks a little hard going and it wasn't obvious how to access the upper section.
The booking system was excellent with no problems experienced.

Water had very quickly recovered clarity and level after previous day's chocolate spate. Some trout activity but Salar not showing. Yellow Mays not yet evident. Perfect accommodation on the river bank at Hilary and Dennis Humphries' Yew Tree Cottage. Many thanks to Alison and Seth for valuable help and advice over rearrangements.

The river was running high and coloured but the fish were feeding hard on nymphs. All were caught on a long leader set up with a sz14 copper head black French nymph on the point taking the most fish. About the same number again as netted were hooked and lost due to the fish slashing at the nymphs in the murky water. The largest fish was over 18" making it a surprisingly good day in what at first seemed like poor conditions. Luckily I could remember where to wade from fishing this beat recently in very low water though extreme care was still needed.
