I had booked to fish Fenni Fach but as Wednesday was a wash off I took up my second Glanusk booking instead. Water still rather cloudy and I managed only two small trout, one on an Adams, the other on orange nymph. Saw very few larger fish rising. As the rain returned yet again I packed up at 5.30 p.m. However, it is always a pleasure to spend a day at this beautiful estate.

The river was at a healthy level but coloured. There was some visibility in the margins and that's where we were able to pick up our fish. We had 10 trout between us that were mostly small but with one lovely wild 17 incher. All taken on nymphs.

18 Brown trout and 10 salmon par between us caught mostly on small bead head nymph. Very little happening on the surface, although there was a good hatch during the evening. A marquee was set up for a wedding reception on Saturday, with floodlights set up to light up the river and trees, stunning.
Glanusk is such a beautiful location to spend a day fishing, and the booking process was as easy as usual

Dear W&U,

Fishing at Glanusk on Thursday was difficult with very windy/cold conditions and heavy showers coupled with the river as low as I have ever fished it. That said, 9 brown trout were caught ranging from 9" to 17/18" on both nymph and dry. As always, no matter what the weather, the W&U Foundation Fishing will bring me back to Wales time and time again.

Many thanks to the staff for your time, advice and politeness.

Kind regards

S

Spent a week at the Glanusk Estate (Glanusk Lodge) with the family (incl. four young children). The grounds were idyllic, the house well-equipped, and the staff were lovely.

The weather was less co-operative with much rain and high winds. I fished three days on the Estate and managed to catch three, four, and three WBT, respectively, on a duo-rig consisting of a parachute-type dropper with either a nymph or other dry on the point. The largest of the fish was approx. 14 inches. The rest were a fair bit smaller. All were in peak condition and all put up respectable fights. To be fair, I should have caught more than I did. I certainly raised far more than I landed.

All in all, it was a fine way to spend a week's holiday.

Cold, blustery wind, showers. Caught a small chub on a dry fly, just below the bridge, otherwise quite a slow day, with only 4 w.b.t. around the 10 inch mark. Nice day. All fish taken on dries.

Blustery, odd light rain. Fish slow to rise in morning, but woke up later in the day.Took eleven w.b.t. between us, with 2 at 1.lb, 3 at 3/4.lb, and the rest small. Shook off many more, and no shortage of rising fish playing hard to get!

Weather mild and cloudy. River showing its bones. Fished top beat a.m. Little rising. Just 2x 8" trout and some salmon parr to small beaded usk naylor pattern. Fished lower section p.m. Two types of mayfly hatching sporadically at 4pm approx. Mainly ephemera danica and a few poss. e.vulgata. Caught 2 more small ones then 2 x 1 1/4lbs on large grey mayfly emerger. Good sport in wonderful surroundings. Will be back. Many thanks to WUF and Glanusk staff.

Despite an overcast day and low water I decided to only use dry flies. The scenery is spectacular here and as I set up among banks of bluebells watching a kingfisher, I just could not help myself tying on a dry fly. I fished the lower beat in the morning and rises were very sparse. Despite this I managed to persuade two wild trout of 10-12 inches to rise and come to hand before release. The low water meant I could wade through the whole of the bottom section, and I had great fun. Just before the 2pm beat changeover rises started appearing but it was time for me to drive to the upper beat. Simply beautiful, but the very sparse rises were very difficult to cover in an unhelpful breeze and I only added one fish for my trouble. I planned to fish into the evening but late afternoon the rain came in and the gloom over Sugar Loaf, the rumble of distant thunder and a distant crackle in the air convinced me to end a very enjoyable day. I would certainly have caught more fish using wet flies, but my intention had been simply to go fishing today - rather than to just catch fish.
