Caught six nice brownies around 11oz each but lost two due to trout acrobatics. All fish taken on nymphs as there was no significant rise throughout the day. River was low due to the lack of rain. Lovely location. Will definitely return.

This is such a lovely beat. We had a great day, even if we only caught two trout between us. We arrived around 2pm and the afternoon was very quiet on the water, though one fish was caught below Blockhouse. There was strong wind for most of the day but luckily with this beat, most of the spots we wanted to focus on had good protection. From 7pm though the evening rise really picked up. In particular, at the top of Beech pool, the regular risers were interrupted by a very big fish (about 3.5lb or more) rocketing about 4 feet into the air and crashing back down. We threw everything at it but no dice. I now think I should have stripped a streamer past his nose instead of a range of delicate dries. Much effort was expended at the risers at Ashford bend but we had less success than in previous visits at that spot. Just one pounder. There was a bit of everything in the evening fly life- principally olive spinners, quite a few sedge with a sprinkling of the odd mayfly and others. So ends a three day group trip to the Usk Valley courtesy of WUF. Those who had not been before could not believe the quality of the fishing as well as the stunning countryside at such a reasonable price. Thank you WUF!

Slightly bad timing as the long, dry spell ended today and was replaced by windy, threatening conditions. However, it was still mild with plenty of insects hatching and fish feeding. Lost an absolute clonker which broke me. Must up my leader tippet from 4 to 5lbs. Fish feeding just subsurface on emerging nymphs which I failed to replicate. Stuck to dry fly and tried all sorts but without much success. I’ll be back!

Very enjoyable day with intermittent hatch and low water.
All the fish came from the downstream end of the beat mainly taken on dries, one advantage of low water levels was that it was easy to cross over and fish the bottom of the beat down to the remains if the footbridge.
