On the 70 mile drive to beat was half-expecting a wash - off after recent poor weather but the clarity was good and the level was fine for wading. 12 degrees, overcast, no rain and a light breeze.
So it all looked good but despite covering most of the beat's length in five hours' fishing with ptn, perdigon, grhe, jig nymphs and red tags the grayling didn't play ball. Had a couple of bumps where I finished in the bridge pool. No fish to the net.
A year ago Wuf had reported a decline in catches after run off incidents upstream from Skenfrith but the most recent catch returns show decent catches of grayling.
Maybe the four wild swimmers I met in the parking area on arrival had scared them away.

A tough days fishing, very bright and warm.
From the banks could see good numbers of healthy trout but getting close to them without spooking was a tough ask.
Landed one on a dry fly

No sign of any fish rising - a little cold. Did hook a couple but failed to land them.

There wasn't a sign of any fish, albeit that any which lurked undetected within the arc of my casts would almost certainly have been perfectly safe.

Still a lovely stretch of river though.

River levels have risen very quickly, banks were very slippery and water levels high and fast ? was not safe to fish so after a coffee and a walk along the beat we headed home.

On arrival at Skenfrith, the river level was high, fast flowing and the colour of chocolate. Very heavy rain downpours occurred throughout the day and any attempt at serious fishing was not viable. David Woof

Blustery conditions and very, very low water. Other than what were probably salmon parr in the streamy bits between pools, saw one real fish rise all day. Eventually hooked and lost two (one probably not a bad fish) in the pool run-ins using a PTN fished as deep as I could get it. Didn't stay into the evening as the weather closed in and it was getting a bit dreich. Nice water though...

Between my son and I, 1 salmon parr about 3" was caught on a size 16 F fly and 1 missed take and also 1 missed take on a small nymph. The river was running very clear and little low, plenty of small fry evident, spotted 1 decent sized trout right at the downstream start of the beat. Even though the fishing wasn't very productive it was still a very enjoyable fishing trip. Many thanks. Regards, Dave and Ben
