It was nice to be able to fish this beat in the Summer for coarse fish. Fished the Mill Pool but only managed 3 chub to 4lbs and missed a couple of bites, all on luncheon meat.

Return is one trout about a pound and a good shad of about 2 pounds. Quite a shoal of them at the top of the beat.

A nice couple hours evening fishing. Despite the cool temperatures there was still reasonable hatches of olives and yellow mays. 5 BT to 12", 2 small, out of season grayling and 2 dace, all to cdc olive emerger patterns.

Fished from around 6pm through to 10pm. Gusty, cold wind seemed to limit the fly hatches although there plenty of sedges with a few olives and yellow mays around during the calmer moments. Ended up with 12 brown trout to 1.5lbs and 2 out of season grayling, all on a tan klinkhammer. Had quite a few takes when the fly was dragging across the surface.

River up a foot, coloured but clearing. Had a couple of shad-safely returned.
A Salmon showed below the rock, giving some inspiration, but failed in my mission. However a lovely afternoon/evening, Thankyou.

Between 2 rods, 20 x trout 6-15 inches, 2 x out of season grayling 7-12 inches, 1 small out of season chub. Quite a lot of nice trout around 12 inches. Not very much hatching (yellow mays, a few mayfly late in the day) and not much naturally rising on a beat which is new to both of us. That cold wind was blowing again with intermittent showers! Spiders got a few in the fast water, but it turned out in the end to be a nice dry fly day as trout were prepared to come up to the artificial. I got most of mine on a sort of parachute Tups, which, looking for something with a yellow body, I nicked out of one of David's well-stocked fly boxes. It's nice to catch a trout on a fly one has tied oneself, but nicer by far on a stolen fly!

Otherwise, the odd showers of rain, while not raising the levels much, do seem to have tickled up the trout fishing a bit. Some of the lower and middle Usk beats, including Usk Town and Glanusk, are fishing quite well at the moment for both stocked and wild fish, although in the lower part of the river watch out for the shad which are now present in large numbers. A protected species, they will grab any kind of trout fly, nymph, wet or dry, even if you are already playing a trout on the dropper!

My first visit to this beat. What an impressive variety of water - fast runs, gravel flats, pools - something for everyone. Caught 4 WBT @ 10" - 12" on #14 parachute Adams plus 1 OOS dace from the flats above the bridge.

My thanks to the ladies at the WUF office. I asked for easy wading and that's just what they delivered, making it a very enjoyable days fishing.

Arrived at 9am, began fishing rock pool, water low for time of year, 4-5 small trout of between 5-10" and a very energetic dace of around 12" all on a gold head hares ear and returned unharmed.
After lunch I spent the afternoon fishing dry fly at and below the bridge 3 small trout caught on a greenwells spider, all returned, one fish with recient injury (classic pike bite pattern)first signs of a mayfy hatch around 4 o-clock as I was leaving.

Strong downstream wind made for difficult conditions until it started to drop late in the evening (8pm) and a good olive hatch started. Finished with 4 trout to just under 2lbs and an out-of-season dace, all to olive emerger and gold head. Some large trout were witnessed in the margins with one pushing 4lbs sat underneath Boughrood Bridge.
