At 2ft 7ins on the Llanstephan gauge first thing this morning, Rectory was at the limit but fish have occasionally been caught on Bridge Pool and Gravel Catch at this height. On closer inspection, the water was cloudy to begin with but not unfishably so. On that basis I really thought I'd picked the right day but it wasn't to be. I fished Bridge Pool and Gravel Catch three times alternately for 3 1/2 hours without seeing or touching a salmon despite the water becoming almost clear to three feet depth at midday. At the very least it was good casting practice with water well above the waist at times.

Hoped the colour would have dropped out a bit overnight, but didn’t. Took one look and left, unfishable. However, drove back past the Usk and got a 13lb fresh fish there instead, every cloud!

Back up to the Rectory pool today. After my mate saw a fish on Wednesday I had a go at him. The river had dropped a bit, but not a lot. Fished the fly down the pool, hooked a shad which when it took I thought oh here he is but no.
Put a rapala on and started at the top, fished all the way down without a touch. Then put on a mepps and fished it upstream, and bang a fish topped and tailed grabbed the spinner but didn't stick, fish of about 8 or 9lb
