Changeable weather today, cloudy, sunny and a few showers with light winds.

Difficult fishing though, not takers on any kind of nymph, but a hatch around 1pm brought the fish to the surface. Unfortunately we couldn't get them to take anything, despite trying many different flies.

As we walked back to the car we both tried casting dries into likely looking areas. This was how I managed to fluke a 10 inch fish.

Not sure why it was so difficult when this is such a productive beat?

Great day fishing on a lovely beat with very good access. Short hatch in the afternoon which got the fish rising after a morning of nymph fishing.

Fishing wet flies in the morning then switched to upstream nymphing in the afternoon. Had a couple of bites and one nice fish hooked which shook off a barbless peeping caddis.

Very enjoyable. 9c with drizzle and brisk upstream wind. No rise or fly until 2’30 so fished nymphs. Caught 3 late morning above lower boundary. Then moved to upper boundary and had good dry fly fishing for 1.5 hours and caught 3 more on parachute adams.

River in perfect condition (Brecon gauge at 10"). Bright and sunny all day - but cold. Intermittent chilly breeze from NE. Steady dribble of olives emerging over the day with occasional brief hatches. Martins switched on to them very quickly but not the trout. Hardly saw any rises all day. Persevered with nymphs until 15:30 but retired defeated.

Well we set out with dread after seeing the weather forecast, rain and cold. Sure enough as we hit the Usk valley the heavy rain started. Still the river was in good nick so in for a penny. Had tried spiders and heavy nymphs to no avail when I decided to try dry and dropper to get better control of the nymph. After a while I believe that a fish went for the elk hair caddis and on striking found I had a fish on the nymph, a small pheasant tail. Somewhat confused, I continued with this method, no mistaking the next, fish rose blind and hammered the caddis.

For the next 3 hours the fish went crazy, rising everywhere, despite pouring rain and an air temp of 6.
There were many Olive Uprights on the water but despite covering multiple fish with duns, nymphs, and emergers not another hook up was to be had. The river really is an enigma, an enjoyable day but she slapped my backside yesterday.
