A good day. 5 trout and loads of takes, mostly on Rusty Klinkhammer and a few on nymphs. A cold, strong wind blew most of the day, but the stream is sheltered from most of it luckily.

27 x trout 6-11 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer, Monnow Gosling. A rather cold, dull, windy afternoon with the brook high coloured after a cloudburst yesterday. However, the mayfly were up and so I changed to a bigger fly with good results.

Great day at the brook; 17 trout between 7”-11”. All nymphing.

Gave a river trout fishing a go earlier this year, due to reservoir trout being unexpectedly slow. What a difference the brook looked in early Spring, compared to Summer. There were plenty of flow (running clear though) and not much overgrown trees. There was more room for casting, even with a 7ft rod. Getting in and out of the river was also a lot easier with clearer bankside.

Water temperature was 10deg (air temperature being13 deg). Sparse hatch happened around mid-day but only saw 1 rise late-pm. So mainly fished a single weighted nymph. Flow was strong in places but there were fish in there, as well as the flat glide. To catch, the fly needed to have the right weight to go down, but not too heavy to hang-up on the bottom. It is imperative to keep swapping among 2mm, 2.5mm, 3.mm and 3.5mm tungsten bead of the same pattern throughout the day. Four fish came downstream of the bridge, the rest were from half-way up the bridge toward the end. Lost one good fish that jumped and spat the hook, around 13”. So, there was at least a good fish in there, waiting for a lucky angler. Good day overall!

7 x trout 6-9 inches, Goldbead Hare's Ear nymph. Washed off the upper Wye today so fished a local stream at short notice. A lot of water was still coming down from the Forest, but it was not unduly coloured. As every spring, it's amazing how the gravel of the pools has been moved around by the winter floods, plus a couple of newly fallen trees. There are two places now where you have to dodge around a tree by getting out and then in again - left bank usually best, but look out for old barbed wire.

6 x trout 6-9 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. Local forest streams not so much affected by high water as the main rivers.

This was a last minute booking, the weather the day before was not good with heavy rain, so I was not expecting much. Arriving later than planned the river was not as bad as I was expecting, loads of takes and one nice Brownie about 9 inches on Rust Klinkhammer. By 1.00pm however the colour had changed and got worse by the hour with no activity at all.

My first Gloucestershire WBT- about 7" - size 20 pheasant tail with a small tungsten bead. Warm day after the rain.
Crickey- how do the regulars get so many fish? You can't cast upstream and if you try to drift downstream, it's shallow and clear. Must get a smaller rod and review my leader approach for these small waters. I didn't fish too close to the water treatment plant as it was a bit whiffy. No pies for me today! Oh yes- you can get Vircon disinfectant from Wynnstay (agricultural supply). £3.50 for a sachet- enough for 5L.

Fished a few hours in the morning. River was low but in good condition. Not the usual weather or temperatures for September so non of the daddies got a look in! Missed loads of takes as plenty of fish were rising and managed to catch a couple on Olive patterns.

24 x brown trout 6-12 inches, Rusty Klinkhammer. Nothing much wrong with this water, slightly coloured today after last night's rain.

6 x trout 8-11 inches, Rusty Klinkammer and Monnow Gosling. A couple of hours on a wet and muggy afternoon, but the brook was still low. I was surprised to see a few mayfly duns coming off, late as it is. Also there were a couple of salmon parr, which is always encouraging.
