In the morning I used nymphing techniques until a hatch developed in the afternoon where I switched to dry fly. An excellent day

What a difference a day makes given the disappointing report from the previous day. Our first time on this beat. The weather probably helped us … a soft day with warmth when the sun appeared. There was a blizzard hatch of sedges 13.00 to 14.00 with a continual trickle thereafter … together with occasional March Browns olives and hawthorn flies more than enough to keep the occasional fish looking up. We had 11 in total …. 2 at 20 inches, 2 at 16 and the rest down to 8”. Probably twice as many long range catch and release as we brought to hand! I got in to the tail of a pool late afternoon with 4 fish rising … every one took my size 14 red parachute but then managed to throw the hook. As much in despair as anything I fished further down the run against the far bank to get walloped by the 20” fish coming out of nowhere. Great fishing! We had a visit from the friendly farmer in the evening too, always a pleasure to meet the owners. Many thanks.

First outing on the wild streams this season. Quiet, only fish seen rising hooked and lost.

Sporadic hatches of March Brown in the middle of the day but failed to rise any fish to the dry fly. Occasional fish moving at the surface. 2 fish on wet flies (March Brown spider and Black Hopper) and 2 on gold head PTN. All fish returned. Plenty of wildlife including grey wagtail, dipper, common sandpiper and brief view of an otter. Himalayan Balsam seedlings starting to appear and were removed.

Two good fish lost!
Sunny intervals, low and clear water. No sign of a hatch, so persevered with nymphs.
