Fishing:Trout (River)

My first visit to this river. Was hard going. Most stretches heavily overgrown. Water still rather coloured after heavy rainfall in the previous week. Had 3 small 15cm trout on sedge emergers size 14. And 3 24 cm trout on a Partridge and Orange spider size 14. Trout looked well fed and healthy. Missed a heavy atack on a Tup’s nymph size 12. Didn’t see traces from other fishermen. Really enjoyed the jungle tour.

Great days fishing and a first time for me and my 10 year old son on the Wye. The river was running high which made it tricky in several areas, no joy on beat 3 or 4 but found a deeper run on beat 5 on the top bend. 5 chub all around 5lb and 4 barbel biggest just under 8. Had 1 chub also further along beat 5. All on feeder tactics.

None of our young people caught any fish. Although this was the case they really did enjoy and have asked that we visit again.

Five fish caught in total using worm. Two rainbow trout taken, two young brown trout returned alive and one young perch returned alive. Calm water all day, an excellent place to fish.

Another disappointing day.The spate peaked at 1.3 m on the Ross gauge in the five hours I was fishing and several swims were inaccessible. The weather was largely cloudy and very warm. The bigger chub was around four pounds and gave a good account of itself so that was some consolation for the absent barbel.
