With the weather having turned for the colder we knew water temps would be dropping and the chances of a late season barbel would be fairly remote, especially after a couple of frosts, but we decided on a day on this lovely beat anyway. As suspecting the fishing was tough although a few chub succumbed to roving tactics.

Amazing day for which 5 Grayling does not tell the whole story. I run off between French nymphing, dry fly and float fished maggot was won by the float fishing. All 5 were in the 1 -1/2 to 2lb class, the best estimated to be just over 2lb and one fish was quite dark with signs of historic Comorant damage, the rest all brightly coloured and clearly capable of growing bigger. Looking forward to returning to this beat, focusing on heavy bugs and dry fly next time.

One or two strong pull rounds but no barbel in the net today. Maybe the overnight chill had an effecr on the fishing.

33 x grayling 9-16 inches, 3 x out of season trout 12-18 inches, trotting. A beautiful morning, frost melting under sun. The river is pretty high, but not too coloured. The suspension bridge on the right of way, which is needed here when the river is high, currently has a 21 day closure order slapped on it by the Council as considered unsafe, which it probably is. Time for some repairs!

No fish, plenty of fish moving in the morning however. Would have liked access to one of the boats as it’s a struggle trying to find good fishing spots from the bank.
