First time on the Clettwr in a number of years. Only one fish seen all day, in the larger pool with the high waterfall on the right bank half way up, but it wasn't taking.

Beat:Pond Glandwgan (Aberystwyth AA)

Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)

For various reasons we had a late set off and went to Llyn Oerfa rather than Glandwgan which has longish approach walk. I used to belong to AAA so knew has it some larger fish in it. The weather was warm and v. bright and a very fitful breeze, periods of ripple and then glassy calm. Ben hooked and lost a trout around pound and a half in the first ten minutes. We did see some rises but always in the glassy calm periods and at a distance and the fish were coming out of the water vertically a couple of feet. We saw no fly life at all, apart from hungry horseflies until we were just about to pack up for the day when some midges started to hatch and Ben caught a trout around pound and a half on a small black nymph on the point. We were then both treated to the sight of a trout passing both of us about 10ft away with his back and dorsal fin clear of the water grazing on hatching midges. We both estimated him to be in the five to six pound weight range. We both chucked small black flys in front of him but were ignored so we called an end to a very pleasant days fishing.

River was very low meaning the trout had eyes in the back of their heads. But a stealthy approach eventually brought rewards. The top section of the beat in particular had a few feeding trout in the deeper pools. 14 fish in all: about half small but also some bigger ones up to a gnats short of a pound. A vintage day of fishing a very beautiful beat.
