Caught plenty of Chub mast around 1.5lb, but one was just over 5lb, two Barbel about 6lb all on floatfished pellets. After landing one of the Barbel i hooked another large fish which i thought was another Barbel but it did not fight like a Barbel. did not hug the bottom and make long 50 yard runs just under the surface. after a fight of approx 15 mins a great big fish rolled at the net. After 50 years of fishing i had never seen a live Salmon but here was one of approx 10lb in my landing net. The fish was hooked legitimately in the scissors on a pellet.
After removing the hook the fish was allowed to recover in the net and swam away strongly. for about an hour either side of hooking the Salmon there were numerous Salmon showing and Jumping some of which were well over 20lb.

A low river greeted us but with just a tinge of colour following overnight rain. It was gratifying to watch the hundreds of sand martins feasting on the hatches of mainly tiny flies. More worrying was the flock of 18 Goosanders, nature in all its bounty but not sure a flock of this size is sustainable for trout stocks.
Plenty of fish in evidence but so difficult to tempt. I had one of those days , hooking 4 mostly on parachute Adams but only netting 1 as the others threw the hook after a short fight.
JJ fared better taking 4 tout about a 1lb all on nymphs.
Really enjoyed our day.

Slow morning fishing close to the hut, moved upstream to faster water in the afternoon, had success catching some nice chub around 2-3lb on feeder and luncheon meat. No sign of any Barbel

The spinner fall failed to materialise but as consolation I lost the biggest trout of the season so far on a barbless 18 emerger. Hey ho, as my son said, these barbless hooks are easier to extract from your finger and you’ve lost much bigger salmon…
