Overcast but dry.
My first time here. Not sure what I think about this beat. Not obvious where beat starts and finishes - I didn't see any signage (apologies if I just didn't see it). Access is difficult due to high bank, so unable to always specifically access the bits you want to fish. Upper part of beat unfishable as too deep to wade, and no way of getting to river from bank.
1 trout caught. Another I played for 15 minutes before my dropper fly came off - I could have cried....

Thank you for crediting me for the booked days I could not make last year because of the Covid ban on travelling to Wales. This was a lovely day on one of my favourite beats with the river in great condition and with a good flow. An Usk expert could probably have caught a lot of fish as flies, including mayfly, were coming off all day and particularly in the late afternoon, and plenty of fish were moving, though I did not locate any sizeable ones. I took three smallish trout on a goldhead pheasant tail, two in the Abercynrig Pool and one in Llanobery - they wouldn't look at any of my dries, probably my fault. I found it quite awkward to climb over the crossing point on the fence leading to the lower pool - in fact I dragged a fallen tree trunk there to give us something to step on. My other hobby is wildlife photography and I spent a lot of my day on that, getting shots of a hunting male kingfisher (which appears to have a nest somewhere in the high bank at Llanobery, so please be cautious), a pair of redstarts and grey and pied wagtails catching flies.

4 brown trout, 10-12inches, caught on a nymph fly pattern, 1 chub caught on a dry fly. Managed to get a few rises in the evening on the dry fly but no catches.

Only fished briefly but blown away by beautiful scenery. Very little surface action but several large fish seen via Polaroid’s. Only one brown trout caught on a beetle.

Brilliant afternoon on the Edw, this great river is full of fish. Most were pretty small, 6 to 10 inches although we had several in the 12 to 14 inch range. Nothing much rising but the fish were keen to take nymphs.
