Despite the improved river level it was a tough day fishing wise and add into that the horrible weather and consequent super slippery banks then it made for for 3 rather downcast anglers. This is a great beat and Stefan has done a great job in improving access all along the beat but he can't do this alone. There has to be a greater effort from the landowners to improve things for coarse anglers to justify the prices they charge and to improve safety. Yes, I understand the Wye is a SSSI and I know it's slippery when it rains but when it comes to agricultural matters, the landowners seem to have considerable license in what they do regarding the river banks, cattle do far more damage to river bank flaura than anglers ever will. I've also noticed that other fisheries along the Wye have put some considerable effort into improving access and safety for anglers which has been done in harmony with the river bank environment. Is a little of that on this beat to much to ask?

It has been about 15 years since I last fished this beat. Unfortunately, it wasn't the most productive day despite conditions seeming good.

Good access and many more places to fish than a couple of other visits to the Wye this week but I think I need to review tactics!!

Quite a chilly day with a d/s wind. Water had a nice tint but was pushing through a bit which made the wading even harder than the last time I fished here!
Didn't get a touch before midday but the fish switched on after that before I stopped at 3.
Didn't see any fish rising so just upstreamed a nymph - biggest trout 11" and biggest grayling around a pound.
The other was a salmon parr about 6".

A little hard work for four fish in 5 hours. There wasn't much of a hatch but I wanted to dry fly fish. The photo shows the best by far of the bunch.

Excellent day feeder fishing. Caught on meat and boilies. River up a bit and a big storm later in the day. Some swims were steep and slippery so risky when it was raining heavily.

Dufnant is a beautiful, secluded feeling place even on a day that started gray and finished in proper stair-rod downpours. I found it quite hard going, not straightforward to fish - especially on a decidedly not dry fly day - and a tough wade to boot. For the first hour I neither caught nor saw or trout even in some promising riffly water. Then I caught one - a beautiful purple brownie of a pound plus, then another, and so it went. And I caught more or less steadily thereafter. But the day (the week? the year?) was made by one terrifying, glorious beast of 3lb 2oz.

Cold downstream didn't help much today but managed to winkle a few out on gold bead nymph and spider. A few long distance releases too.
