21 04 21 - Glan - y - Afon A cooler overcast day with an upstream breeze.
A 10.30 start. A few LDO's around but not much happening as I walked up the beat as far as possible, which turned out to be a 100 yds short of the end, due to it being impossible to discern what route one could take to avoid trespassing.
I had spotted a couple of likely runs on my way upstream and so stopped and watched on my way back. My first spot had one fish rising, sadly, right on the far side of the main current.
I decided to look elsewhere and return later.
Further down was a nice run with the odd fish taking flies with gusto.
I tried my favourite pattern but all I got was a look and refusal. After about half an hour of trying different flies, with no interest, I moved back to my first spot where the fish was still rising and I tied on a parachute adams, a fly I can see well at distance. The first cast that was drag free had the fly well taken, my first fish. I could not rise any more fish here so moved back to my previous spot and left the adams on. I hooked 3 fish in about 15 minutes, landing 2, and could not get any further interest or see any more rising fish so packed up just before 3pm.
An interesting day, 3 to the net, biggest 1.25lb.

Cold and cloudy. River level very low . Tried wet flies and nymphs. Some good tugs but no trout caught. Beautiful beat and despite nothing much happening, I had a good day immersed in nature.

Good LDO hatch late afternoon for a couple of hours, lots of rising fish in the faster water.
2 in the morning on nymphs, the rest on dries during the hatch.

Water v low and clear, bright skies, easterly breeze, no hatch at all. We saw two fish all day, caught one. We loved the beat though and already plotting a return when conditions are a little easier.

The huge clouds of dust rising under our wheels as we approached the riverside parking looked more like Arizona than Gloucestershire, however the river looked spectacular; clear and sparkling. We had an early take in Stones, on a yellow/black goldhead and the fish wrapped me around a rock and slipped away. My fishing partner had a salmon swim past him only a few feet away. Other than that we contacted, nor saw, no other fish having covered the entire beat. Mick, the resident Ghillie, clarified the mystery of the Cottage Pool - there isn't one! There was years ago but the approach is long gone and reclaimed by the willows. So don't, as I did, try wading upstream to the cottage because it becomes very precarious and there is no reward at the end of it. Tight lines.
