Unfortunately following a previous day of rain and sporadic showers during the day was not expecting a bumper haul, my brother lost one and caught one (under the bridge) and I fished like an absolute buffoon which is the norm on a new stretch of river, glorious stretch of water and would recommend to anyone, although either were getting older or stiles are getting taller !
Just a quick word of warning, after rainfall some of the river accesses are quite slippy so be careful.

Duo, nymphs and dries all worked. Same old story of a very large trout lost when it got the better of me and wedged itself under a rock shelf. Challenging but fun fishing.

Sadly the promise of a rise in levels and high pressure came to nought. Also the accessible Fly water is currently reduced to just the Bridge Pool and the Pulpit/Island due to rapid growth of bank-side vegetation. The Run, the better holding area for Salmon at this level on the right bank, could not be fished by any method as I couldn’t find the usual access points down the steep banks; no doubt this will be cleared in time for the course season but I think this will be my last visit.

No longer JM from Kingsland as have now retired to Devon. Back for a long weekend for a wedding so took the opportunity to have a day on Abernant.
The rain on Friday lifted the level by .25 of a metre and gave the river a bit of life.
Eight wbt between 8 and 12 inches on a variety of dry flies and now 12 inch grayling on a sedge late in the day.
Several large hatches of olives and a few mayflies but never many fish rising, otherwise would have expected a few more fish.
Several families playing in the river on the far bank restricted area fished to lower area of Lady Alexander’s Catch and wading to the middle of Abernant stream and fishing back towards the bank.
Back in Salcombe now - experimenting with fly fishing for mullet who will take a nymph and wiggly worms and give a good tussle on a four weight, and bass and pollock on lures.
Will be back for another session on the Wye in July.

Lovely session from 6pm to 9pm with many flies hatching and good surface activity. Trouts very most active at sunset, going after the (I believe) large may flies (Ephemera Danica) that very present in large number that afternoon. I fished the upper half of the beat, starting at the Tan house campsite where I was staying and wading upstream. Great stream with succession of pools and faster sections with plenty of good spots. I was lucky to catch all the fish my biggest deer based dry flies (hook 16 but I wished I had bigger versions). 8 fish caught, the biggest around 10'' but lively and energetic animals. I will come back!

A few salmon seen in the tail of Vanstones, but quite coloured fish and probably residents. One small shad caught and safely released.

Three of us fished using the french nymph method and with success on the faster runs and tails into pools. The majority of fish were caught in and just downstream of the large pool on the main bend of the beat. The river clinches after the bend and provides a long run down the left bank which produced a large number of hard fighting brown tout and 2 salmon parr of about 15 to 20cm. Our largest brown trout was about 35cm and was very dark in colour. Caught from the deep section of the ledge below the bend.
