Well, my day started with a flat tyre followed by a fly box falling into the river and being washed away, then a leak in my waders! The fish also were disinclined to cooperate the only decent one caught was by a friendly otter who had a mammoth battle with a 2lb brownie. He eventually lost out and the fish escaped. The otter has my sympathy! A beautiful beat but I couldn't work out how to fish it. The gullies between the rock are quite deep and fast and even my weighted bugs were swept away too quickly I think. No fish rising and not much fly life. I think we're still not quite 'awake'.

Hard work today, a lot more trees down than last year making some of the better pools difficult to fish. Plenty of fly life - only a few rises but managed to bring two fish to hand on an Adams and a further two by nymph (GRHE)

WUF - a suggestion for the beat map; it would be useful to show the two footbridges and the public footpaths as it’s not easy getting out of the canyon.

Great day on the river but sadly no salmon. My beginners luck didn’t hold. Beautiful water and mostly sunny day. Although I did manage to catch a 1lb trout on a small cascade fly. Met a fellow angler on the bank who gave me some good advice and pointed me in the right direction - Thank you Charles.

A salmon of 12 lb from beat 5 on a flying C. Saw a few fish moving although the general feel was that there were not that many fish in the river. Can you please rewrite the directions to the pools, we wasted an hour trying to find them , particularly the right hand bank of beat 5 which bore no relation to the instructions given.

WUF Note : Congratulations on the salmon and thank you for the feedback on the directions. Whilst this is the first time we have heard of anyone having difficulty in finding Beat 5, we have looked at the information supplied and made improvement where necessary.

Bright sun and a fierce downstream wind, so hard work. Fishing dries through the shaded areas under trees proved most successful. Lots of nips and tugs on small nymphs, but couldn't connect. All fish safely returned.

River level good and water clear. The day was generally bright and sunny but with a steady breeze blowing in from the west.
Quite a few sporadic hatches (March Brown) throughout the day with the odd trout rising occasionally.
Netted a WBT at the lower end of the beat on an Olive Klinkhammer. Three more good takes at the top end of the beat.
My friend caught two in the upper ripples of the section.
Towards the end of our session (3pm’ish), quite a hatch of March Browns brought the trout alive. He switched to the nearest fly he had that resembled the hatch and hooked one almost immediately. It threw the hook after quite an aerobatic display!
A lovely beat on a very picturesque part of the Usk with Pen-y-Fan as a backdrop. Will certainly return on another occasion.
All fish returned safely.

Beautiful day on the river. Its a lovely spot with plenty of variation however today the water level was low and it was a fairly bright day. I didn't catch anything or see much fish movement however I suspect it was my lack of skill and experience that defeated me on the day.
