Rain overnight brought the colour up which got progressively worse. Nothing to report after a couple of hours so bailed out and visited Sportfish at Winforton, which prooved to be an expensive decision!

A first Wye salmon for GORDON Wigginton. An 11lb plus hen from the Vanstone. Much joy all around. I had a decent Chub at the same time from the Maddocks - big enough to raise hopes for a moment or two. Helpfully guided by Mick Sutton a good day.

Fairly quiet until late afternoon when things livened up, some nice Barbel that fought hard in fast water,3 over 8 lbs, also couple of small ones under 1 lb which is a good sign for the future .All in all a nice beat to fish and hope to return next season.

Lovely soft, warm day with showers, river low and clear. No sign of feeding trout today however and four hours' fishing produced only a couple of knocks, so with the main pool getting rather hammered by two of us I decided to give it best. I am not convinced that with low water this beat is big enough for two anglers, as there is so much slack water in the middle and at the bottom end. Studded waders recommended for the slippery stones.

One decent 16" trout landed and two others pricked. Like yesterday (Abercynrig) river very low, rises were sporadic and hard to cover in clear conditions and downstream wind. Tried everything but I was found to be lacking. Sometimes reasonable hatches but fish largely ignored top of water. Caught on a copper beaded dark nymph with no name from fast water. One seriously fat fish and the river and wildlife were beautiful.

Four trout caught on downstream nymphs. One during the day, and three as the daylight faded.

I guess we were just unlucky, but the day was almost a complete write-off with uprooted streamer weed pushing through all day, always dragging the bait away within minutes of casting. Very difficult conditions - our challenge was not catching fish, but getting the bait where it might work and keeping there. If it hadn't been for the weed problem, the stretch looks as though it would be a really good stretch to fish using a variety of methods.
The 'other' fish was a small eel!
