Lovely day on the river. Masses of LDO's and midge. Odd fish rising to them. Birds singing like it was springtime. Two small grayling. Roamed the whole beat from top to bottom. Lovely beat and looks fantastic trout water. Fantastic day to be out on the upper Wye. Roll on spring!

Trying out my new Tenkara rig, which was challenging. Wye in beautiful condition in every way except it lacked any sign of fish.

Lovely beat, and I always expect to have a good catch, but failed to raise any interest. Mind you, it was bloody cold. Drove home through a blizzard.

All the fish were caught on dry flies, even with the odd snow fall. Large dark olive imitations were doing the trick as there was the odd hatch of them. I fished as a guest of Shaun Watkins.

Had the fish in slow deep water. All caught on olive dries. Large hatch of dark olives lasted 3 hours, one grayling 19".

This wasn't such a bright idea. Supposed to be a few hours trotting, but with the river was still very fast at 2 foot 4 inches on the gauge and still with a bit of colour. Found on arrival I had cleverly left my wading stick at home - a bit of equipment I rather needed today. So I tucked myself in under the bank and finally produced a 14 inch grayling which was a major drama to play up the current. This was the only success of the day. I then lost all the terminal tackle in a snag which rather discouraged me, so wandered along the bank to look at some salmon fishing and dream of the coming season.
