A very poor day on the river today. River was on the rise and lots of weed which made for poor fishing. To round it off local canoeist decided to use the stretch for there launching base.
Overall the wife had four Barbel the best pushing 6lb. I myself kept on the move and had a zero catch return.(not heard the last of it)
I must say over the week we fished in many areas between Hereford area and Ross and we had a very pleasurable week catching lots of fish. Also lots of very small Barbel, around the 1/2lb mark which goes to show the river is thriving.

A great day on the river. A perfect end to the brown trout season. Got there at first light (7am) and fished through till lunch, a pint and some food then back out until it was dark, 7pm. Unfortunately my friend could only make it for a few hours towards the end of the day, he had multiple takes but only landed one brown trout.
I fished with a nymph at about 18" on a Klinkhammer indicator, which was a perfect set up for the day. Four Brown Trout, three Grayling and one Dace made my day but I also lost 10-15 hooked fish that slipped the hook (barbless). All fish were caught on the nymph except for the biggest trout (12-14") that was taken on the Klinkhammer in one of the slower moving sections of the river. All safely returned.
The river had a decent amount of water in it and felt 'fresh', especially after a early morning downpour. The weather for the rest of the day was a mixture of bright and sometimes a bit overcast. A great day on the Monnow.

River at an ideal level and slightly coloured. Showers in the morning but bright sun in the afternoon. Fished up from bottom of beat to weir with duo rig. Had several expressions of interest, but failed to connect. Tried weighted nymphs in the fast water below the weir. Pricked a large brown trout right under my feet and saw him roll away as the hook came out. Changed to klink and dink in the large pool above the weir and found some fish under the south bank. Hooked and netted a 10" wbt, beautifully coloured. Safely returned. A few yards further up the nymph was taken by an acrobatic wbt. Safely netted a fit 14"er after two leaps clear out of the water. Wonderful markings again and a huge tail. Swam off strongly on release. The nymph doing the business was a type of gold beaded hares ear with orange butt. I don't know it's name but it was part of a set of river flies bought from the Welsh Fly Fishing team after last year's training day at Ty Nywedd. They have proved deadly. Had the usual company during the day - kingfishers, heron, dippers and red kite. Wonderful day to end the season. Thank you WUF I look forward to coming back next year.

River level increased overnight and pushing through making it difficult. Had a 7lb 12oz early from the middle of the river 150yds d/stream of the hut. Caught the other 2 (and the chub) in the afternoon from the top of the stretch just below the rapids, best of 8lb. All fish caught on pellets/PVA bag method.
Had an interesting chat with the new Ghillie, Glynn who gave me some great advice, which resulted in the 8lb fish. As always on this stretch, great day
