I've just taken out a Wild Streams season pass, so this was my first outing. I haven't fished for trout on a small river for 20+ years so I was bit rusty to say the least. What an enjoyable day though. I had a great morning exploring this beat.
The water was low but there were fish in all the likely looking spots. I only managed to land & return one small 8" brown trout. I touched a few and lost a couple in the series of pools between the railway bridge and the bottom of the beat. Most of them were going for a gold bead hare's ear nymph.
I am fairly clueless as to what flies I should be fishing. The comments on successful flies on these catch reports are really useful for tips. Fishing the whole beat and 20+ pools with only a few casts/flicks in each was a new and really enjoyable experience.
The WUF set-up and excellent website and maps have been a great discovery. Hopefully I can soon hone my skills. Being keen to explore I fished the adjacent Honddu Pandy beat in the afternoon and also the nearby Upper Grywne Fawr beat but with no luck at either.

I spent a couple of hours fishing early afternoon from the top of the beat to the bottom. A huge amount of insect life but no sign of any fish rising or taking flies. This was my first time on the beat and it is always good fun to explore a new fishing spot.
The whole beat is lined by trees but it still okay to fish with some creative casting techniques.
I felt that this beat was less fish-able in low water than Lower Stanton above but that could just be my lack of local knowledge.
I'll be back to try again soon.

My first time on this lovely stretch. I fished the whole beat but didn't see or touch a fish. The middle pools in the steeper section over the pancake bedrock are fantastic and feel like (despite the evidence of my return) that a fish should be taking every time. I'm guessing this stretch improves when there is more water around. Although perhaps I need to work on my stealthy approach to the tiny pools.
Although I saw no action, this was a great way to spend an hour or so. The water was much clearer than on the Honddu which I fished in the morning and there was a lot less farm detritus on the banks.
I'll definitely be back to try again.

Lovely day fishing on Taff Fechan. A really lovely beat that feels surprisingly remote and wild in places.
Had 5 wbt, including 1 beautiful fish close to 1lb. Fished the top of the beat, just down from the reservoir. All fish were caught on an elk hair caddis and fish were rising for most of the day.
Most productive time seemed to be from 12-2. The riffles and pocket water also worth focusing on

With the river being low the salmon rod was barely used and instead I spent a couple of hours dry fly fishing. I landed two brown trout, best 2.5lb, and lost a couple more. Quite a few Mayfly coming off.
