First time on the Dore and what an amazing river, it's got just about everything you could wish for. Very good conditions today, generally overcast with little wind, but very little fly life and just the very occasional rise. I went for a small DHE tied with a pheasant tail body and got 7 lovely fish to the net ranging in size from 6" - 12". I only fished the first half of the beat as I came a cropper at a pool that was too deep to wade through, maybe 150 yards before the bridge. I'm sure that people who are familiar with the beat will know the spot. Having hacked my way through the undergrowth to get above the pool, I was just getting back into the water and my boot caught on a tree root and I went in head first - hey-ho, you've got to laugh - fantastic day though !

River quite low and very clear, one heavy shower just about got through the tree cover! Landed 6, from 4" (!) to 11", about the same number missed or shook the hook. All on the smallest klinks my ageing eyes can manage, in the faster water. Magical as ever, the logjams keep moving and changing so its a different game each time.

Many thanks to Terry Ward for making me so welcome, giving me an easy beat to fish. I am afraid I failed to connect with a fish, but a cracker showed opposite the house at the end of the day,Thanks also to the staff at the foundation for sorting the beats. Be back in September to try again.

Fabulous stream. Weather hot and oppressive. Wading was slippy even with felts and studs - more to do with the shape of the boulders - I found it ok but difficult to be really stealthy. Scared a few wbt but didn't manage to catch one. The beat is wonderful though and I will return.

Another lovely evening in the countryside with kingfisher and greater spotted woodpecker for company…many thanks to the beats who participate in the half price evening rod scheme, makes this much more viable. First time on this beat – I was trouting, James had a salmon rod.
But that was a little optimistic with water at this low height on this beat so was abandoned in favour of the trout rod as the evening wore on. This is a fantastic trout beat at this height with little water that cannot be easily covered when wading. Plenty of fish rising as the evening went by….not clear to what although there were still the occasional mayfly hatching, also lots of sedges. 4 nice trout up to 14” came to our parachute dries - hungry fish that were rather lean – perhaps the cold spring meant their usual feast had been curtailed?
But definitely one for another visit.

My first visit this season and all I can say is that this place is rapidly going downhill. Litter and evidence of campfires everywhere, even in the fly only areas. Also this is the first season that I've seen evidence of bait fishing in the fly only areas. I suspect that due to lack of supervision this place is heavily poached. The road is also in a disgraceful state after recent forestry operations.
Llys y Fran is good value for money. This place no longer is.

First time in over 20 years I've fished for salmon on the Wye and this lovely stretch of water with well kept river banks, so I was very rusty with my fly casting and I think my tackle has seen better days. Saw a large coloured fish several times just above the house and a silver fish higher upstream.

We fished the very last pegs down stream in this section well the 3rd to last and the last as the other one had a wasp nest there not good company. it was over cast and the river looked perfect we had bites through the day and a very even catch I had 11 barbel to 9lb and Mike had 12 barbel to 8.5lb a good day all fish fell to 4mm pellet feeder with 12mm halibut pellet on the hook tried the meat but the chub were all over it so the barbel did not get a look in, we both fished in the deepest part of our pegs. My only complaint was these pegs have steep steps and the angler who had fished here before me using red groundbait obviously did not want to go up them when he wanted a wee so I had the strong sweet smell of urine for the day thanks for that, well worth the walk for the fishing though a very good section of the river a lot of salmon showing out of the water as well.

This venue is ideal for anglers not wanting to route march 2 miles to get to the river, good parking easy to find and swims with steps or easy access I make these points as information to new anglers. River low and clear started on the float catching chub to 2 1/2 lb waiting for late afternoon, Barbel did not disappoint, not the biggest, 3 between 5 and 6lb but fought well. If more water and cloud cover who knows a favourite venue for me
but I just love barbel and the 3ft twitch, back in September I hope.
