Area:Lower Wye

Beat:Middle Hill Court

Fishing:Coarse

Beautiful beat with excellent access. Fished the field upstream of the car parking spot. Downstream would be much harder to access. We had action throughout the day with barbel from 3 to 8lb plus a couple of chub around a pound and a half. One of the latter was seen bashing fry and was caught on a small silver lure. 5 fish each but the padawan beat the master by almost 7 pounds. Usual tactics of pellets or similar behind a feeder.

Both caught barbel and chub but a slightly frustrating day. Raps on the rod tip in every swim we fished which rarely came to anything positive and I suspect were from small chub. With a different approach I'm sure you could have really good day on the float on this beat.

Beat:Abernant

Fishing:Trout (River)

Nymphing (Czech/French). All fish mostly caught in the fast moving water. River level appeared good, and clear. First time we fished the beat so not possible to compare it to other times of the year or river levels.

Beat:Greenbank. ( Usk).

Fishing:Salmon

A very fit 25" ( EA scale: 6 lb ) Silver cock fish Caught on a single hook FC.
Much easier to unhook in the water and less damage than a treble. Went back well.

The stretch had very fast water despite level having dropped. Nevertheless an enjoyable day catching a few barbel and chub.

Fishing:Salmon

Having only a small chub for a long morning fishing it was off to re-charge the batteries in the Bridge Inn for a long lunch. Having discussed tactics with the other rods it was suggested to try a sunray in the gravel catch. It took four casts before the reel was screaming only to spit the fly after a airborne cartwheel. I tried again and a slightly coloured cock fish around the 10lb mark was caught and released from just above the power wires.
