Nice looking Beat, safe car parking in the church grounds. River was in good condition so we explored the beat fishing a few swims below the islands and then a few swims in the upper meadow. We stuck with the tried and tested Pellet and feeder approach and although bites were generally few and far between but we managed a couple of small Barbel and a couple of decent Chubb before the night drew in. Thanks to W&UF for the pleasure of fishing on our favourite river and apologies for the late catch report.

A blizzard and 3" snow on the A470 at the Storey Arms, after overnight rain following a dry week, set the scene. Weather was cold (4C/39F)cloudy and drizzling all day. The river was colouring up, cold (5C/42F)and rising on arrival. [Yesterday Terry had said it was 'gin clear and in superb condition', whilst giving great advice on where to fish.]
Fly fished Beats 5, 6, 3 and 2 using 1" Brass yellow / black tube of F/S1 line, giving up early afternoon when the river was like chocolate with tree trunks and rubbish coming down - I now see that the Llanstephan gauge had gone up overnight from 1'7" to 2'9" and was out of sight submerged as at midday.
Needless to say, no fish caught or even seen.
PS: Herd of inquisitive bullocks guarding the gate from the Old Stable Block to the river caused a worrying delay to my lunch...

Back at White House for a third season.
A last minute change in weather forecast, thanks Beeb, and sadly the fly rod remained in the truck. Not to worry, rain and wind don't stop you spinning..... One kelt at about 24" and a pike; not what we want but better than working for a living!

We arrived after a 21/2 hour drive in pouring rain and slid our way to the river, first chuck 1 barbel of about 4 1/2 lbs, next chuck barbel of 8.04, six hours later with 2 chub to show for several moves and a proper soaking we headed back towards the swims by the lane up to the car park, the rain stopped, we cast out and caught every cast for the remainder of the session finishing with 8 barbel and 7 chub. This beat is lovely, the banks are somewhat difficult although the walk to them is lovely and the peace and quiet and scenery are some of the best on the river. We had a great day and will be returning next season, thank you Wye and Usk

The river was low and clear and had a snaggy bottom as several feeders were lost. The bottom end of the beat is a long walk up and over the woods, the swims looked good but advise travelling light to these pegs so we settled in the first field. Disappointing to find a lot of dog muck around as this seems a popular place for the locals to walk their dogs. Only one chub around 3lb caught on meat in the late afternoon.

Well this was my second ever fly fishing attempt and things couldn't have been more difficult.
Stayed overnight at Bronwye Guesthouse in Builth Wells, highly recommended, where a huge full English set me up for the day ahead. Things didn't look good after heavy rain all night and the surrounding hills were covered in SNOW!
I arrived at the Irfon, and as I'd feared, the river had risen overnight and was pushing through at quite a rate and was heavily coloured. I wasn't confident wading in such conditions but attempted to fish before calling the WUF to find the day was officially a "wash off".
Fantastic looking venue even at this time of year, the owner was friendly and very helpful and I can't wait to return in better weather for another bash free of charge.
As you've probably guessed no fish were caught.

Tough day with low temperatures and persistent rain. The river was running through quickly and rising, such that we couldn't hold the bottom with a 4oz feeder any more than a few yards out. Two started in the lower village stretch, one in the woods and one at the woods end of the meadow. Mid-afternoon the two moved from the village to the meadow and late afternoon, JC took two barbel in quick succession from drain cover swim, 10lbs 6ozs and 11lbs 14ozs! Turned a tough day into a great one and gave us something to toast in the pub that evening and raised spirits for the next day.
