Fished from 8.30am till dusk. Tried several pegs but only caught fish from the pebble beach. Water levels were quite low and falling, so not ideal.
I had a friendly swan with me all day feeding on the weed from my line. Bites came sporadically throughout the day but with a little more enthusiasm in the evening.
The track is beginning to be slippery on the first corner near the entrance so take care unless we get a dry spell.
The barbel were all between 7-8lbs and in lovely condition.
A busy kingfisher was evident most of the day fishing for fry very close to us.
A most enjoyable day.

Next to Aymestrey, Lyepole is probably my favourite Lugg beat. Unlike most of the river, Lyepole will invariably produce on those dog days of summer. Not that today fell into that category; there was a distinctly autumnal feel to it, with the overnight rain putting just that hint of colour in the water. The Grayling were really having it, with fish caught - and usually 2 or 3 of them in rapid order - from just about every run I fished. Mostly fish in the 8 to 10 inch class; but there were plenty at 1lb plus - including a brace, that I caught on consecutive casts nudging 2lbs a piece. All on tungsten nymph. Trout, which mostly came from the same shallow run, taken on a tan klinkhammer. Tres bonne!

Despite rain earlier in week river still low and clear and dropped a further few inches on the day. Chose to spend day on lower section with majority of fish coming late in day to meat and pellet tactics.
Barbel to 8lb and chub to 4.5lb. Tried all pegs from cattle drink downstream. Back in October, hope for more colour to water.

Fly fishing only using several several patterns based on research and local recommendations. Not even a single rise to our lures.

Although there was sporadic surface activity the fish seemed very 'spooky'. Presumably this was in part due to the river being extremely low and clear.

All fish fell to feeder tactics. No better way to spend a day.

21 x grayling 10-16 inches, 18 x trout 6-14 inches, dry Grey Duster and various North Country spiders. A very dark day for August, threatening rain which didn't arrive until the end of the afternoon, plus a very cold up-stream wind from the east. Altogether it felt quite autumnal. Water not quite the height for salmon; I did try the odd cast with the big rod during the day and a couple of the big fish showed but proved too "stiff" for my offerings, whatever I tried. But water conditions for trout and grayling were just fine, with a tinge of colour to the river. Some of the better grayling are coming to the fore now - quite a few 15 and 16 inch fish in the catch and fighting hard.
