Caught one small trout (6") and returned it using brown hare dry fly. Two more hooked but not landed using small blue nymph. Wet weather, fast flowing water, slightly cloudy. Highly recommend wading staff.

Fresh 15lb fish from beat 4 this morning. River clearing and a good height, overcast, perfect conditions. Plenty of shad about now and a few good salmon showing throughout the beats.

Hot and bright most of the day with some cloudy spells.
Moderate rises and this was when most fish were caught on dries on the main wide section below the foot bridge, although one angler had several pulls on nymphs and caught one on the fast flowing are in the woods but the bridge.

A trickle of mayfly and occasional rise from a salmon parr of which we caught three and that was it. River looked good when we arrived but an hour later the heavens opened and finished the fishing for the day. There are two trees opposite each other that have collapsed together half way up the bottom stretch making it very difficult to get past.
From the all weather parking I found that it was easier to go through the gate on the left just over the bridge and then under the bridge arch.

Bit of a cock up on the booking front by me I'm afraid, what I was thinking I dont know, this high up and at this time of year? Still it was only to be a bit of a respite from the main river and just for a couple of hours, ha! I thought I'd hit the lower half of the beat but after the "expedition" down to the start I realised another mistake by me. Even with the deftest of casting you really struggle to access any possible areas where fish may hold station. I'm no stranger to the wild streams and get great enjoyment from them, but this was a real struggle. The upper stretch from the bridge looked more open from what I could see but may have a few more "cattle gates". Blank.

River higher than expected considering other section of the Usk I fished earlier. Weather foul! Heavy rain so forced to fish with nymph. Caught 2 trout max 12in. Rain finally stopped play.

AT's description of this beat has it off to a T - but having been here before we knew what to expect! The river was slightly coloured when we arrived but clearing so we thought no problem with mayfly fishing. Of course then it rained - and rained - we got soaked and the river got more coloured but that didn't stop us and we fished till about 6pm. Whenever the rain stopped the mayfly hatched and the fish went bonkers. We hooked 12 on para mayflies but the long shank hooks don't hold well and only 4 came to hand. Dropping the fly in to the fishes window of visibility was likely to produce a violent reaction with fish coming at times from nowhere - fantastic and very exciting fishing with the coloured water giving us a bit more cover than usual. Thanks WUF for one of the fishing highlights of the year.

Beat:Bideford Brook

Fishing:Trout (River)

Caught a 8" brown trout after 3 minutes on a wet fly. It started raining soon and only caught a 4" brown trout 30 minutes later.
River looked not very clear and casting is almost impossible because of the vegetation. Nice day, but had to stop because of heavy rain.
